The incessant monsoon rains are wreaking havoc in the Northern Himalayas. In yet another unfortunate incident, a major landslide occurred in Himachal Pradesh’s Kinnaur district on Wednesday at around 11:56 am. Over 40 passengers are feared buried under the debris, following a landslide that has reportedly hit a Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) bus, a truck and some other vehicles near Neugal Sari.

As per media reports, the impact of the slide was harsh enough to cause the driver to suffer major injuries. The concerned teams of the army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and the Home Guard have rushed to the spot to undertake the rescue operation. However, with the shooting stones constantly rolling down the hills, the rescue operations have been greatly hampered.

The video shows how boulders are gushing down the hills, further cascading into the valley below and forming a thick cloud of debris and dust.

Providing further details on the incident, the Himachal Chief Minister, Jairam Thakur said that the police and the local administration have been directed to carry out the rescue operations. Additionally, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been notified and put on alert.

The reoccurrences of landslides through the monsoon season have left environmentalists and climate experts highly concerned. The last incident that took netizens by storm occurred on July 25th, when around nine people were killed as the boulders descended on a tempo traveller on the Sangla-Chitkul road in Himachal Pradesh.

You cannot control landslides, but you can certainly avoid travelling to places that are prone to frequent landslides during monsoon. Because while all of us love to travel through the hilly terrains and feel the monsoon breeze embracing us, let's not forget that safety comes first!
