On the outskirts of Gurgaon, on Sultanpur road lies Basai village. As Basai is only 8kms short of Sultanpur it is covered by the protected status of that Sanctuary. It is a birders paradise. According to Government sources up to 2003, 240 species have been recorded here.
The site extends over a square kilometre with most part being permanently under water as a result of seepage from the canal from the Gurgaon Treatment Plant. This area has water hyacinth, typha beds, flooded grassland and reed beds. In addition there are seasonally, active paddy fields, saline drenched flats. There are very few trees and considerable interchange with Sultanpur and probably other nearby sites.
With Dwarka Expressway coming up right next to the wetlans, it is a matter of time before this birds' paradise gets lost in "development".
