Gateway of India is the only accessible route to Elephanta Caves. If travelling by local, then CST is the station from where you can travel upto Gateway by cab. From the back of the Gateway, one can purchase a ticket for 2 way journey availing boat service for Rs 180. The last boat to leave from Elephanta Caves is 5.30pm, please note.
The boat ride is a full 1 hr 15 mins journey. On the way only things to do are munch chips and feed the sea gulls, chat n gossip, click pictures or fall asleep!
On arrival, a toy train service is available for Rs 10 to take you up to a certain point. An entry fee of Rs 5 is again charged to enter the zone.
A flight of rock carved stairs make its way to the caves. The side being frilled with stalls displaying souvenirs and jewelry for sale.
A ticket of another 30rs is to be purchased to enter the caves!
BEWARE OF MONKEYS!
The central cave is elaborate and wide spread with pillars supporting the top. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The unique Trimurti is a masterpiece carved out of the rock.
To the left is the half man- half woman depiction of Lord Shiva and to the right the sculpture narrates the story of Ma Ganga being trapped in the locks of Lord Shiva!
The other caves remains ruined, where conservation work is in full swing. Caves for deities and places for worship are prominent in all of them.
The Portuguese invasion ruined the Hindu caves. Numerous shivlingas are still intact!
The main elephant carving is installed in the Museum, which is the main reason why the caves have been named Elephanta caves.
