It is said that , during his 14-year vanvasa (exile), Lord Rama spent a few years in Panchvati, which is famous for "Sita's haran" and the several events that led up to it. Panchvati, which is situated along the Godavari, the second-longest river in India, is known for its extensive mythology and past. On the left bank of Nashik's revered Godavari River is Panchvati.

There are several very tall, old banyan trees close to the Kalaram Temple that are thought to have originated from the five banyan trees that gave Panchvati its name.

The words Panch, which means five, and Vati, which means banyan tree, are combined to form the name "Panchvati." This is where Sita's Cave, also known as Sita's Gumph, is located. Temples include Kalaram, Kapaleshwar, Ganga Godavari, Sunder Narayan, Talkuteshwar, and Nilkantheshwar. There are numerous monuments in and around the Panchavati area, including the Goraram Mandir, Murlidhar Mandir, Tilbhandeshwar Mandir, Balaji Temple, Sandvyachi Devi Temple, Vitthal Temple, Pataleshwar Temple, Naroshankar Temple, Ramkund, Karthikswami Temple, Dutondya Maruti Temple, Katya Maruti Temple, Panchmukhi Hanuman Temple, Bhadrakali Temple. Due to its abundance of temples, Nashik has earned the nickname "Banaras of western India."
