Munroe Island or Mundrothuruthu is an inland island group located at the confluence of Ashtamudi Lake and the Kallada River, in Kollam district, Kerala, South India.
It is a group of eight small islets comprising a total area of about 13.4 km. The island is accessible by road, rail and inland water navigation.
I came here by a local train which I catch from kollam railway station with a ticket of ₹30/- per person for General ticket which is valid for 3 hours.
I took a train at 18:50pm and reached munroturuttu at 19:07. It's a very small station and you literally have to jump from coach to platform as it's very low.
As soon as I got down at platform a local girl and a men approached me out of curiosity that from where I am and small talks. We had to cross train tracks to reach exit. The guy on platform told me "Welcome to our land". A very welcome gesture.
It was already night so I went directly to my stay which was a good AC room as I am from North of Himachal and it's hard for me to feel this kind of temperature.
Next morning I wake up and from my front balcony I see people in these long wood boats sitting and enjoying the morning sun ☀️.
For canoeing you have to pay 500/- for 2 - 2.5 hours. But if you are a group of 3-4, it'll be much cheaper for you guys. Always do good negotiation.
There is a small cafe here in Munroe island by name of FRIENDS which I'll suggest everyone to go and must eat there. The owner of FRIENDS is the only person who didn't tried to cheat me because of language barrier. Everyone here in Kerala put a extra charge in food because I am North Indian. But here in this cafe the food is cheap, tasty and quality is 100 times better than anywhere else.
You can also take a bicycle on rent to go around the island which will be very cheap or you can ask your stay host before reserving that if they have bicycle available as they give it for free and renting a bicycle in this small town is not easy.
