Kothligad (commonly known as Peth fort) rising to a maximum altitude of 2,033 ft is nestled in the famous Bhimashankar wildlife sanctuary near Karjat and was primarily used as a watchtower & ammunition depot by the ruling armies.

We started our trek from Ambivali. The enroute to the peak was scenic and beautiful. It was cloudy. After hiking for an hour or so, we reached at the plateau, from where the beautiful fort of Kothaligad was visible. It seemed like the clouds were playing hide and seek with the pinnacle of Kothaligad. It was all magnificent.

After sometime we reached the main gate. The fort has a cave at the base and a small temple. The odd topography of the hill and by extension of the fort looks like an imperfect nipple or an inverted funnel to the naked eye. According to the locals the fort is actually more of a lighthouse from which directions were given to know the advancements of the enemy and keep a watchful eye over Mawal.

Next stop at top we saw a couple of restored cannons. Looking at the cannons one can gauge how the actual fort would look like in its heydays. Along the Bhairoba cave, steps are carved leading the pinnacle. Small water tanks and some cannon balls can be seen on the fort. The first one is the cave of Goddess, besides which is a water cistern and the last one is the specious Bhairoba cave. A flat floor and well-sculpted pillars are the specialty of the cave.

The interesting and thrilling part of the trek is that it has a circular staircase carved from the inside which reaches the top. The stairs were so intricately carved through the rocky pinnacle, it was indeed a miracle on how it would have been crafted. Nearing to the top, my heartbeats echoed whilst I was only able to hear wind whispering and birds adding to the harmony. As the fresh green grass moved in consonance with the wind like curls on a layer, I could see clouds getting drifted over the edge of fort plateau. As kothaligad stands detached from the main range of Bhimashankarit, it provides a rare 360° view from the peak.
