Coronavirus has made us realize how our actions can help in keeping the environment clean. These are some of the tips you can follow to travel in an Eco-friendly, sustainable way:
1. Use natural resources effectively
We sometimes keep the tap water running or take long hot showers. These lead to unnecessary water waste. Try to use all the natural resources effectively.
2. Try to minimize the amount of waste you are generating
Don’t carry or purchase disposable bags, plates, spoons, cups, etc. Instead carry reusable versions of all of these. For e.g. I am a black coffee lover and I always carry a cup when I am travelling. With these basic, little things you can reduce the amount of waste you’re generating.
3. Help the local people by buying gifts from small local shops
Help the local economy by buying gifts from local shops. Focus on buying more locally produced goods rather than imported goods. Buying locally means less transportation, less processing and packaging. Especially when it comes to food, I always prefer local.
4. Say no to single-use items
Plastic bottles and cups, plastic grocery bags, straws, etc are some of the examples of single-use items. They generate a lot of waste. Make sure you always carry your own reusable bottle and when we are travelling, we usually pick up some souvenirs for our friends and family. Make sure you carry cloth bags with you when you go to the local markets for shopping.
5. Use local transport
We can reduce our carbon food print significantly by walking, cycling or using public mode of transportation and moreover, it’s a lot of fun that way. I love walking or taking public transport. I remember how much fun it was exploring Pokhara, walking. Stopping in between for some chai with a local lady, asking for lift from a local uncle while coming back. It’s the best way you can completely take in the place.
