Making an explosive statement, the Delhi government has announced free ridership for women in DTC buses, cluster buses and Delhi Metro.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said this will allow women have a safe travel experience and access the modes of transport which they couldn’t due to high fares.

However, the Delhi CM also urged women to not take this subsidy if they can afford tickets so that women in need can benefit from this scheme. The subsidy will not be imposed on women and it is a matter of choice whether women want to take this facility or allow others to be benefited from it.

If all goes well, the Delhi CM said the scheme will roll out within the next two to three months.

The officials have been given a week’s time to prepare a proposal detailing how and when the scheme can be implemented.

As per the ruling AAP government, the scheme will cost the Delhi government about Rs 700 crore, if implemented this year. The party chief also said that the entire cost will be borne by the state government and hence Centre’s approval is not required.

CM Kejriwal said that the scheme is expected to increase workforce participation of women.
