Coorg/Kodagu often known as Scotland of India is one of the major tourist attraction and has various places to visit. Golden Temple and Harangi Reservoir are near to Kushalnagar Town. You may also plan to visit Cauvery Nisarga Dhama which is also near Kushalnagar Town.
Namdroling Monastery which is also known as Golden Temple is the second largest Tibetian settlement in India after Dharamshala. Bylakuppe is a Tibetan refugee settlement which was established by Lugsum Samdupling and Dickyi Larsoe & the Namdroling Monastery was established by Drubwang Padma Norbu Rinpoche.
The temple complex is huge and is a great sight to see various young Tibetans seeking enlightenment and education. It is a delightful sight to find Tibetan’s perform their rituals and prayers. It is suggested to visit this monastery during Tibetan New Year (Losar) which is in the month of February/March. For over 15 Days various Tibetan cultural dances are performed.
Sera Monastery is modeled after the original Sera University in Tibet and is at a distance of 2 KMs from Golden Temple. There are few smaller monasteries like Sakya Monastery and the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery which can be visited en-route to the main monastery.
Monastery timings are from 9 AM to 6 PM and prayers are performed at 1 PM and is a wonderful sight to watch.
Harangi reservoir is located at a distance of 10 KMs from Kushalnagar and is built on the river Harangi which is a tributary of the Kaveri. This dam has a beautiful garden built across it and can be a picnic spot for tourists. One needs to visit this place during monsoon when the water is left freely from the reservoir. There is stone statue of Goddess Cauvery and Chamundeshwari Temple which is dedicated to Lord Shiva & Goddess Parvathi near the reservoir.
