Kannur is a Malabar district in Kerala. Political murders and revengeful violence make Kannur an infamous place in Kerala. These are common sentiments when anyone talks about Kannur. However, I wanted to learn and explore what Kannur has to offer to travelers. Let me share with you what I discovered during a recent road trip.

I didn't hear the alarm as I was asleep. Oh my god! It's 5:30 a.m. now. I woke my friend Rishad. Last night, we agreed to start the journey around 5:00 a.m. We finished our daily routine within a few minutes and left home. It was raining outside, but we continued our trip. I had more places in mind to visit. "Where should we go first?" We had no answer until we reached Mahe. Mahe, also known as Mayyazhi, stands out with its French colonial heritage. Mahe is a union territory, so you can find petrol, diesel, and even alcohol at cheaper prices here

We didn't spend much time there. We finished breakfast in Thalassery, a place famous for 'Thalassery Biriyani.' We decided to visit 'Palkkayamthattu' first. After asking a few people about the place, we found that nobody had any idea about it. We relied on Google Maps to find the route.

After a one-and-a-half-hour ride, we reached Palkkayamthattu road. Along the way, we encountered irritating things like a traffic jam and a party procession. The road to Palkkayamthattu was a bit tough with a steep ascent. Despite the crowd, it was an adventurous off-road experience. While I can't say it was an untouched beauty, the place is well-maintained by the tourism department. Of course, we had to pay tickets to access the area.

We had an easy hike to the green highland, and the hill was magnificent and panoramic. As we reached the peak, we took a moment to rest and breathed in the fresh, cool air. The scenery on almost all sides of the hill was breathtaking and glorious.

We left the place at noon and decided to rest at a Masjid after having our food. Palkkayamthattu was far away from Kannur, but all the other destinations on our list were fairly close to each other. The 'Arakkal Museum' was the next destination we had to cover, just a ten-minute ride away from Kannur town. The museum is dedicated to the Arakkal family, the only Muslim royal family in Kerala, which once controlled Maldives and Lakshadweep during their golden era. The male rulers were known as Ali Raja, while the female rulers were called Arakkal Beevis. The palace’s Durbar Hall has now been converted into a museum, presenting the history of the Arakkal family through artifacts and more. Despite not being impressive from the outside, the museum proved to be a time-worthy visit.

We paid a visit to St. Angelo Fort, also known as Kannur Fort, which is one of the oldest historical places in Kerala. The fort was built by the Portuguese Viceroy Don Francesco de Almada in 1505. The highlight of the fort is the view of the Arabian Sea from the top. We took a short walk inside the fort, where there was a well-maintained garden and a neat park

We scooted from St. Angelo Fort to Muzhuppilangadi Beach at 5:00 p.m. All I had heard about Muzhippilangadi beach was that it's a drive-in beach in Kerala. It was my first experience at a drive-in beach, so I had no idea about it. I was left speechless when I saw the tremendous beach. Riding the bike through the beach, splashing water, and enjoying the view of the deep blue sea were delightful experiences. The beach was crowded. We stopped the bike, opened our hearts and ears, and listened to the waves crashing against a nearby rock. Walking on the beach and feeling the sand beneath my feet was a heartwarming experience. I didn't run into the water, but the waves touched and washed my feet. This beach turned out to be the highlight of my trip, and I have no words to express my delightful experience.

The trip changed my view on Kannur. Known for political violence, it turned out to be a peaceful journey for me, both physically and mentally. All I want to say is, 'Please go to Kannur before you raise your voice against it'—the Place that God Blessed.
