Day 1
About 100 km away from the busy fast moving life of Mumbai lies a tranquil town Matheran."Matheran" which means forest on the forehead ( of mountains) lies in lap of Sahyadri hills of Western Ghats.Matheran is an amazing place for the nature lovers. One can spend here quality time close to nature away from the hustle bustle of the metros.
How to reach : About 100 km from Mumbai. Neral is the nearest railway station from Matheran. Neral lies on the CST- Karjat local train route. Neral is also station for Indian railway trains on Mumbai Pune route.
From Neral one can take toy train to Matheran.Journey of toy train to Matheran add thrills to the trip as it passes through hills and gives an awesome experience .Toy train takes approx 2 hrs to reach Matheran.
Another way to reach Matheran from Neral is to take taxi. This road trip of 20-25 mins gives pleasant experience of western Ghats .Taxi drops at Dasturi Naka and from here one can either hire a horse or can have walk along with rail track reach Matheran .It takes around 45mins to track Matheran by walk.
Experience: Walking into the forest along the rail track gives a pleasant experience .There are various small eatery joints along the rail track where one can get refreshment. Beware of monkey's here as they will rob your eatables.
At Matheran: Since Matheran is declared as Eco sensitive region so one can hire horse or hand rickshaw to explore the town and off course on foot. Even personal vehicles are not allowed after Dasturi Naka,owned vehicles need to be parked there at designated paid parking.
There are around 38 view points , famous Charlotte lake to be visited in Matheran .Some famous view points are Rambagh point,lords point, Sunset point.One can sit and relax at the lake.I personally enjoyed walk through the quite calm forests of Matheran.Atmosphere here is so relaxed that one can get rejuvenate. The singing and chirping birds gives soothing music to the ears thus making the trip an heavenly experience.
