
Patalbhubaneshwar, the Cave/Gufa (an Archaeological Survey of India site) is located in Gangolihaat area in Pithoragarh District of Uttarakhand. It is 5oo km and about 12-14 hours journey from Delhi via Moradabad, Haldwani and Almora. There are different routes as well, take suggestions before commencing your journey.
The history/belief of the Gufa/Cave is traced back to Treta and Dwapar yug. In present history, it is beleived to be discovered by Jagatguru Adi Shankaracharya in 9th C A.D. when he consecrated the place through a ShivaLinga inside the gufa. While the history and other associated facts are on internet, you can witness its importance once you are inside the cave. You will feel the energy. The local guide explains each and every thing associated with the place.
Since it is a cave shrine with lack of modernization like lights, stairs etc. darshan closes by 5:30 pm. So, its better you plan to stay somewhere between Gangolihaat and Patalbhubaneshwar. There are many hotels, resorts and homestays with mesmerizing views of The Himalayas including Nandadevi and Panjajuli peaks. Go for darshan as early as possible as it takes about 4560 minutes.
Though its not a very crowded place, still not known to many, darshan queues are there as a limited number of people can go down in the cave at a time. Next batch goes only after the previous comes up. People of any age from 2 year kids to elderly people who can walk and are willing to go. The place is managed by Local Mandir Committee and they charge a nominal Ticket Fee. Mobiles/cameras are not allowed inside the cave.
One can plan to visit other places nearby like HaatKalika Mata Mandir, Kotgaadi Mandir, both are highly worshipped and revered among local populace.
