The Three Kings Church, Goa

Tripoto

On top of a small hillock “Cuelim”, in the South Goan village of “Cansaulim”, lies the “Our Lady of Remedios Chapel” commonly known as the “Three Kings Church”, which is believed to be haunted. Legend has it that, once upon a time three Portuguese kings ruled the area. In pursuit of being the ruler of the territory, King Holger Alvunger, poisoned the other two in a royal lunch feast. To save himself from the wrath of the locals, he too committed suicide by consuming the same food. Later, the villagers bury the three bodies in the premises of this church. Since then, it is known as the Three Kings Church in Goa. Many claims to have experienced paranormal activities in the vicinity of the Church after sun down.

This church is open only during the Christmas celebrations, which ends on 6th of January, with the three kings feast. On the last day of the celebrations, three boys from the neighboring villages of Quelim, Cansaulim and Arrosim are selected Kings, to bring gifts to child Jesus as per the Three Kings tradition in the Bible. However, the celebrations end before the sun set as the legend has it that anyone staying in the premises after 6 vanishes.

Haunted or not, the views from atop the hillock are stunning and it is a perfect destination for a quiet getaway from the hustle and bustle of Goa
