Village Resorts of Uttarakhand That Will Give You A Pure Taste Of Life In The Hills

Tripoto

More than a century and a half ago, the British had established their summer home in the Kumaon region of the Himalayas. The towns of Nainital, Kausani and Ranikhet in this region were uninhabited gems and the Britishers took no time to establish palatial mansions, which quickly became ideal retreats amidst the flowering meadows of Uttarakhand.

Flash forward a hundred years and the old colonial homes of the British have now been turned into awe-inspiring heritage resorts.

Heritage resorts and farmstays in the region promise the kind of inspiring isolation that we seek desperately today. If you too are looking to get away from the chaos of city life, here are five of Uttarakhand's best vacation retreats travellers have been swooning over lately.

Check them out!

Dyo finds a mention in Jim Corbett's book, The Temple Tiger And More Man-eaters Of Kumaon published in 1954. The famous hunter and naturalist was hosted by Sah Ji, a local, at his ancestral home. Today that home has been refurbished into Dyo - The Organic Village Resort in Mukteshwar.

At Dyo, you will find a fair blend of a luxurious and country life experience. The resort is perched high atop the Amravati Estate, surrounded by orchards of plums, peaches, apricots and wild local berries. Relish the pahadi chai with views of the spectacular Himalayan peaks such as Nanda Devi, Trishul and the five peaks of Panchachuli.

Dyo offers a special farm to table menu and during the stay, you can take a walk to the surrounding farm and pick your own vegetables for dinner. Your stay at Dyo also promises an introduction to organic farming in the lap of the hills.

How to reach: Mukteshwar is 350km from New Delhi and 50km from the famous hill station of Nainital. Taxis are available from Kathgodam, the last railhead connecting Kumaon to the rest of India.
