Every one has heard of the Pyramids of Egypt , but would you believe that Sudan has a lot more pyramids than all of the Egyptian pyramids combined.
Sudan hides an ancient breathtaking place that most do not know about. The Meroë Pyramids are also known as the forgotten pyramids of Sudan. This place consists of nearly 200 pyramids that are all located along the banks of the Nile River.
The Meroë Pyramids were built between 2,300 and 2,700 years ago. Many of the tombs inside the pyramids consist of mummified kings and queens that ruled the Meroitic Kingdom for over 900 years. The pyramids were built with steep slopes and small bases also known as the Nubian style.
The blazing sun was shining; A tour guide walked the camel that I rode on and guided me through the historic pyramids. Each moment we got closer to the pyramids, my excitement was palpable.
My jaw dropped at the first view already, but when I saw the inside of one of the pyramids my joy knew no bounds. It was outstanding! The carvings on the walls were quite intricate and artsy and portrayed a great illustration.
The Meroë pyramids are a few hours drive away from Khartoum, the capital city of Sudan. I strongly recommend spending a desert night in a tent and witnessing the magic of Meroë at dawn. There are other sites close by with more interesting historic and heritage sites.
Recommended trip: 2 days and 1 night
