One gets to see beautiful carvings on the exterior walls as well as on the internal walls of the Kamakhya temple. a good number of sculptures are also fixed on the temple gates.

Kamakhya symbolises Shakti. Symbolic to this is a very special sindoor, available here, made from rock and is called Kamakhya sindoor, which is believed to be a blessing bestowed by the Kamakhya Devi herself, to the wearer.

One stands and wonders about the stories of Parvati and Shiva . The love and bonding they had found in one another. Goddess Parvati being offended by her father for not respecting her husband and then sacrificing herself-sati. God shiva getting angry so much that he could destroy the whole world. God vishnu trying to pacify him, he cuts down the body of his beloved Parvati into pieces by his Sudarshana chakra. All the places where different parts of the Goddess Parvati/sati fell a temple was built. hence the temple Kamakhya where the most sacred part of the female body fell.

It is likely that this is an ancient Khasi people sacrificial site, and worshipping here still includes sacrifices. Devotees come here with goats to offer to Shakti. Shakti is the personification of divine feminine creative power, sometimes referred to as "the great divine mother" in hinduism.

PANDIT JI AND THE COMPLEX BEHIND.

My Darshan of the Kamakhya Goddess left an impression of a young goddess, 16 years old, with twelve arms and six heads of varying colors, representing a powerful goddess who is omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent. She is ornately dressed, typically wearing a red sari, opulent jewelry and red flowers such as hibiscus.

She holds in each of ten hands a lotus, trident, sword, bell, discus, bow, arrows, club or scepter, goad, and shield. Her remaining two hands hold a bowl, which is made either of gold or a skull.

She is seated upon a lotus, directly on top of Lord Shiva, who in turn lies atop a lion.

To each side of her sit Brahma and Vishnu, who are each seated upon a lotus, as well.

Coming out of the temple,I felt overwhelmed with an energy I didn’t quite understand.
