Indian Railways just released a statement that Meghalaya is set to get its first ever electric train and we can’t wait.
On March 15, the Northeast Frontier Railway accomplished a significant feat by inaugurating a single-line track spanning 22.823 km between Dudhnai and Medipathar, as well as a double-line track stretching 34.59 km between Abhayapuri and Pancharatna.
In a statement the Railways said, at present Mendipathar is the only railway station in Meghalaya which is in operation since 2014 after being inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to the Ministry of Railways, electrification works in these sections has been carried out by the Central Organization for Railway Electrification (CORE) and they are ahead of Indian Railways strive towards becoming a Net Zero Carbon Emitter by 2030.After the inauguration of the electric traction, trains will now be able to operate directly from Mendipathar in Meghalaya with an increased average speed because they will now be hauled by the electric locomotive.
The Ministry further added that not only the trains will be able to maintain punctuality because of the increase of trains – both passenger and freight-carrying trains will operate through these sections with full sectional speeds but also parcel and freight-carrying trains from other states will be able to reach Meghalaya directly.
The officials of Central Organisation for Railway Electrification (CORE) had conducted a speed-trial run of the Electric Locomotive Train Earlier on the 15th of March, 2023 between Mendipathar Railway station to Dudhnoi at a speed of 65 KMPH. The speed trial was made mandatory in order to check the smooth running of the overhead electrification. The operation of the electric locomotive train would draw 25KV from New Bongaigaon substation.
