Hampi is a sought after hereitage site in Karnataka, that draws both domestic and foreign tourist. After its recognition as UNESCO world heritage site, the place has garnered more ground to attract tourists.
The village lies on the banks of the Tungabhadra river. It served as a significant capital region protected from all sides by the river and hills on the others. The structures and ruins standing today forms the group of monuments at Hampi.
There are various ways to reach Hampi, by booking a car, by bus or by train up to Hospet from where again cars have to be hired. We hired a car for two days to go around the place.
A large part of the group of monuments constitute the temples, rest are museums, palaces, stables and other structures. Few of these temples are still used for worship.
Hampi derived its name from the river Tungbhadra also known as Pampe.
