Unlike other botanical gardens in India, Lalbagh is one of the oldest botanical gardens in India and it is a major tourist attraction spot as well. We, living in Bangalore have surely visited this place. Mine is to be said to be twice. It's a very planned garden with its organized routes, glass house and ornamental flowers growing throughout the property.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THIS GARDEN:
This garden has a historical significance. The construction of the garden was commissioned by the famous ruler Hyder Ali who at that time was the king of Mysore. But it was finally completed by his son Tipu Sultan who designed the garden keeping in mind the beautiful gardens of Sira in Tumkur district in Karnataka. The layout was based on the sprawling Mughal gardens that were being constructed through out the Mughal Empire. The foundation for the now famous Glass House was laid by Prince Albert Victor in 1889. Today Lalbagh is home to some of the most exotic plants.
The ambience of the garden is so calm and pleasant the one can easily forget about all the stresses and pains of the life. Mind becomes so serene. The joggers come here for both morning as well as evening jogging. The garden is so huge that one must need to hire a tourist guide for covering all the spots of the garden.
There are few important spots to see inside the garden-----
1. The glass house which hosted some of the rare spices of flora and fauna.
2. The fountain in front of the glass house designed in European style.
3. Lalbagh Rock which was supposed to be 3000yrs old.
4. The floral clock.
5. Lalbagh lake.
The name "Lal Bagh" was given by Hyder Ali because his immense love for red roses. So this botanical garden was full of rose roses but after that other exotic plants and flowers from the countries like France, Persia, Afghanistan, Arabia were added into the list Tipu Sultan.
Every year in the month of January during the Republic day and again in August during the independence day, Lalbagh hosts their bi-annual flower show. People from all over India as well as even from abroad come to witness millions of flowers and thousands of plants. Each year a different theme is chosen and flower arrangements are made according to the theme. The show takes place inside the striking glass house. The timings of the show are from 9:00 am in the morning till 6:00pm in the evening. The whole glass house lights up in a golden glow which makes the structure look even more magical and etheral.
HOW TO REACH BOTANICAL GARDEN :
It is located at a distance of 38 km from Kempegowda international airport in Bangalore. One can also book a taxi or hire a cab for 45 min drive through.
BEST TIME TO VISIT LAL BAGH :
The ideal time for visiting the garden is during winter which lasts from November to March in Bangalore. Even though the garden remains open throughout the year but it can get pretty hot and stuffy during summer.
So one can enjoy the cosy winter morning's or afternoon's picnic mood by simply soaking under the soothing sun light.
