When were Undavalli Caves Excavated?

These caves are from the 4th and 5th centuries which are formed due to the weathering of rock. The Undavalli caves are a brilliant illustration of ancient rock-cut architecture. The caves are 4-floor and made from single granite rock. The largest and the most important is a second-floor cave which is dedicated to Lord Vishnu who is in a reclining posture. It is sculpted from a single block of granite. The Lord Vishnu sculpture is 5 meters long.

About the Undavalli Caves

Undavalli caves are four-storeyed cave with neatly carved chambers with pillars. At the outset, you will arrive at a smaller cave with three openings which has a carved panel on the top with elephants and lions carved on it.Moving a few steps ahead you will find four big idols of saints seated overlooking the lush green hills. They are surrounded by two lion sculptures.

One of the cave is dedicated to Trimurti GOD: Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Mahesh.

Big Sculpture of Lord Ganesha, Lord Hanumana and Lord Narsimha

It is a primary sculpture of the Undavalli caves. A giant Garuda sculpture is seated on the top of Lord Vishnu sculpture, it depicts that the Garuda is watching out when Lord Vishnu is taking a nap on the coil of Sheshnaga. You can also see the other deities around the sculpture of Lord Vishnu.

It is eloquent to see that the idols are carved in black granite stone while the caves are excavated from the sandstone. The caves are circled with lush green grass surrounded everywhere on the hill. The view and the rustling sound of the beautiful Krishna River flowing soothe the person's mind.
