Nanjangud Tourism and Travel Guide

This is a town in the Mysore District on the banks of the Kapila River. This town is also known as the "Dakshin Kashi" of India. The major attraction in this Shaivite region is the Srikanteshwar Temple also dedicated to Lord Shiva. The mythological origin of the temple refers to the search of ambrosia by Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma before which came out poison. This poison was consumed by Lord Shiva to save the world from destruction. After this Goddess Parvati pressed his throat to prevent the poison from spreading through his body and thus the throat part became blue with poison. This is the reason Lord Shiva is also referred to as Neelkantha. The bridge across Kabini here has been declared as the oldest bridge of India. The other attractions here include the temples built during the rule of the Hoysala Dynasty, Cholas and Chalukyas. The other major temples here are the Nanjundeshwara Temple, Parashurama Kshetra and the Prasanna Nanjundeshwara Temple.
