This time when I visited Jaipur for a weekend I thought of traveling Jaipur in a different manner, on a bicycle which gave me many advantages, beating traffic in crowded spaces, saving the costs of cabs to visit the local attractions and more importantly doing my little bit to save the environment.
I took a Raleigh MTB geared bicycle for my 2 day trip to Jaipur from Pink pedals (http://www.pinkpedals.co/) for Rs. 550 a day which was totally worth the experience I had. The first day I reached Jaipur during the day and took my cycle and sped off to try the famous local eateries and nearby attractions. Eateries included:
1. Rawat Mishthan Bhandar for pyaaz kachori and mava kachori
2. Lassiwala
3. Pandit Pav Bhaji
4. Chaat at Chawla's
and nearby attractions:
1. Hawa Mahal, built in 1799 with red and pink sandstone, it has a unique five-story exterior is akin to the honeycomb of a beehive with its 953 small windows called jharokhas which were made in order for the ladies to observe everyday life and festivals celebrated in the street below without being seen.
2. Birla Temple, entirely built in white marble by the Birla Family knows no race, caste, creed or gender is open to all equally.
3. Jal Mahal (go there at night to take in the view of the lit up island in the middle of the lake)
4. Albert Hall Museum which I stumbled upon when I was cycling around and saw the most beautiful lighting on the building.
For day 1 I retired to my zostel which was in the heart of the city and I loved the experience of staying at a hostel with other people staying in the same dorm room. The zostel was bloody awesome where you get to interact with people from various countries and various cultures. Staying in a hostel was really light on the pocket and an experience which I want to have every time I make a trip.
Day 2:
Wake up early and pick up your cycle and start your mountain biking to Nahargarh Fort. Reaching the top will give you a sense of accomplishment accompanied by the view of the entire city waking up to the morning. If you plan to cycle your way up to the Fort take a geared cycle as it would make your life easier to get to the top. The Fort opens for public viewing at 10:00 am so you'll have some time to explore the outer boundaries of the Fort, you can have a nice gentle walk on the walls of the Fort and have the view of different part of the cities. You'll be lucky enough if the weather becomes pleasant, in my case it was lightly drizzling make my journey to the top very amiable. Till the time the fort opens you can also view the Baoli which was used in the making of one of the most iconic Bollywood movies "Rang De Basanti" where Amir Khan and Sharman Joshi have a beer-off bottoms up. Once the Fort opens you can spend some time viewing the fort from inside which costs Rs. 50 for Indian citizens.
Post this unlock your cycle and head on to Jaigarh fort which is home to the world's largest cannon ever made. You'll also witness a lot of langoors and monkeys having a territorial fight at the fort. This is a small stop and you can expect to finish this viewing in 15-30 minutes and plan your move to Amer Fort. The entry of the Fort costs Rs. 50 for Indian citizens.
Amer Fort, created by red sandstone and marbles, the artistic work inside the Fort simply makes you glare at them for a long time and as always the architecture makes you think that such a thing was made 500 years ago. Inside Amer fort, you can also experience an authentic Rajasthani cuisine at 1469 restaurant. You can go to various viewing points inside the palace and have a view of the vast expanse of the fort area. Also, right opposite to the fort you can climb a series of stairs and view the fort in all its glory at once and also get some good photographs of the Fort. The entry of the Fort costs Rs. 100 for Indian citizens.
This concluded my trip to Jaipur from where I headed back to the city of Jaipur and ended my trip at Patrika Gate which at Jawahar Circle. Jaipur City was built on the principles of Vaastu Shastra and had a wall surrounding the city with seven gates. Later Sawai Man Singh built a new gate (eighth) gate. The Patrika Gate has now become the ninth gate of Jaipur.
