The UNESCO World Heritage List has added three stunning temples of the Hoysala Empire to its prestigious roster. These temples are located in Belur, Halebid and Somanathapura in Karnataka and showcase the exquisite craftsmanship and artistic vision of the Hoysalas. Read on to find out more!

The Hoysalas: A Diverse & Dynamic Culture

The Hoysalas were a powerful dynasty that ruled over parts of South India from the 11th to the 13th centuries. They were known for patronising art, literature, religion and science. During their reign, they built several magnificent temples that reflected their religious beliefs, social status and artistic influences.

The Sacred Ensembles: A Blend of Styles and Traditions

The sacred ensembles of the Hoysalas are composed of three main components: the temple, the gateway and the enclosure. The temple is the focal point of worship, where a towering gopuram (tower) dominates the skyline.

The gateway is a massive structure that marks the entrance to the temple complex. The enclosure is a fortified area surrounding the temple and contains various administrative, residential and ritual forms.
