Somanathapura is a little known town in Karnataka, hiding a magnificent gem- the Chennakeshava Temple dating to the Hoysala era. It has recently come into prominence, as this temple along with its better known sisters at Belur and Halebidu, have entered the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites in India.

HISTORY OF THE TEMPLE
The town of Somanathapura was founded in 13th Century by a general named Somanatha working under the Hoysala kings. He got the temple constructed in 1258 CE, along with many other temples, none of which are existing now.
The temple was badly damaged in the 15th Century and later renovated in the 16th Century by the Vijayanagar kings.
ABOUT THE TEMPLE
The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and the main sanctum of the temple has shrines dedicated to different forms of Lord Vishnu.
The temple is built in Hoysala style and contains many intricate carvings on the outer walls. It is built in a raised star shape platform.










HOW TO REACH
Somanathapura is around 140km from Bangalore and 40 km from Mysore. It can be reached by road.

You can combine a trip to Somanathapura with Talakadu, a quaint town which was buried under sand till around 20 years back, and Shivanasamudra falls
BEST TIME TO VISIT
Best time to visit is during winter when the temperature is low. The stones get very hot during the day.
We went in August and weather was pleasant at that time as well, so it can be a great monsoon roadtrip as well
