Glory of Santiniketan

Santineketan is popular for Visva Bharati University and its culture, apart from that the picturesque rural Bengal and of ranga mati (red soil) path, trees, flowers which almost covered most of the part of the area, gives an utmost peace.

Santiniketan, popularly known today as a university town, was originally an ashram built by Maharshi Debendranath Tagore, where anyone, irrespective of caste and creed, could come and spend time meditating on the one Supreme God (worshipping the Formless). Later Rabindranath founded the Brahmo Vidyalaya school and in 1901 he established his dream as the first open-air school. The present Visva Bharati University was expanded to form this school only around 1921. Other than a humane and environment-friendly educational system that aimed at the overall development of the personality, Santiniketan also offered one of the earliest co-educational programmes, Environmentalism, Women's Emancipation, Gurukul traditions, Humanism, Internationalism, Cultural interchange in South Asia.

Also thanks to Tagore’s legacy, Santiniketan has managed to preserve Bengal’s fast-disappearing rural crafts culture through folk markets.Apart from the educational system, attraction for the bliss of rural Bengal, calm and peaceful place at Sonajhuri gram, accompanying baul songs, saotal dances (tribal), the beauty of ajoy and kopai rivers, and most of all it is famous for festivals like Basanta Utsav, Rabindra Jayanti, Barsha mangal, Poush Mela and Magh Utsav are celebrated in its unique own style.

My travel calendar

Day 1 - we started our journey from Kankali tala (9kms away from Kala Bhavan),from there we went to khoai ,had our lunch in sonajhuri and visited buddha Bihar ,amar kutir and srijani shilpa gram (nearest tourist spots) for the day.

Day 2- We spent some time in the university area which is a walking distance from our hotel and visited kala bhavan, upasana ghar, kalo bari, chatim tala, ghanta tala, hatir jheel etc. Bangladesh bhavana. In the afternoon we headed towards shanibarer haat, the most attraction of santiniketan.

and head back towards our hotel in the evening as the haat depends on nature’s daylight. Having no electric supply made this haat unique.

Day 3- we skipped deer park as we were running out of time and needed to leave for the station in the afternoon so we did a quick stop in the museum or Rabindra Bhawan and uttarayan complex.

Later in the afternoon, we wrapped up our luggage to say goodbye to our weekend destination Bolpur.
