Beautiful, serene and blissful – you can use all these words to describe the beauty of the mystical land of Sikkim. With the Kanchenjunga ranges overlooking the tiny state, Sikkim is dotted with many picturesque hamlets that can be visited during weekends. Infact, instead of staying at the crowded destinations, you can now opt for staying in these lesser known villages. With these villages adapting to eco-tourism, these places are now quite appealing to travellers and tourists with their simplicity and natural abundance.

Yangang is one such idyllic hamlet in South Sikkim surrounded by the rolling mountains on one side and the dense green forests on the other side. It is a lovely destination for spending a weekend away in peace and serenity. The friendly villagers will welcome you with open hearts and warm smiles and you can get a taste of Sikkimese hospitality. So the next time you are in Sikkim, make a point to visit the less visited Yangang. There is a bungalow on a hilltop at Yangang from where you can get a vantage view of the Bhaleydunga Hills and the meandering Teesta River valley below. There are a couple of homestays also at the village where you can stay.

Things to do at Yangang

Relax and rejuvenate

The place is so beautiful that you can simply sit and relax at Yangang enjoying the natural beauty of the place. Early in the morning, you will be awakened by the sweet melodious chirping of the birds. Harsh sounds of the city are rare here. You will love the silence of the place. Yangang is a perfect destination for relaxation away from the city life and all the stress. You can spend a delightful and tranquil weekend here.

Go for Birdwatching

The beautiful hamlet is a birdwatchers’ paradise. It is the home to some of the rarest and exotic species of Himalayan birds like flycatchers, sultan tit, minivets and many more. Being very close to the Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary, you will be able to see a large number of birds in the nearby forests and the village itself. Even if you are not a birdwatcher, spend some time looking for these beautiful birds and try to know about them. The experience will be quite enriching.

Explore the village

Yangang itself has some attractions to explore. There is a Lepcha Heritage Museum where you can find various artefacts of Lepcha culture. You will get an insight into the Lepcha traditions and culture here. There is also a helipad just 3 km away from the village. Another prime attraction is the Tig Cho Lake surrounded by the dense forests. The local monastery is another interesting place to visit. There is a rock painting of Guru Padmasambhava in the village near the monastery.

Visit Ravangla

Ravangla is another popular hill station of South Sikkim nearly 24 km from Yangang. You can make a day trip to Ravangla and visit the attractions there like the Buddha Park, known for the huge statue of Lord Buddha. The Ravangla Monastery and the Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary are other places to see in Ravngla.

Taste the Lepcha cuisine

A visit to a place is not quite completed unless you taste the local cuisines. Try the delectable Lepcha cuisine at Yangang. If you are staying at a homestay, you will probably taste their cuisine at the meals. And in the evening, interact and chill with your hosts with a glass of Chee or Chhang, the local alcoholic drink.

You can visit Yangang any time of the year. The winters are not that biting at Yangang and the summers are cool and pleasant. Bird watching can be enjoyed throughout the year.

How to Reach:

The nearest airport is at Pakyong near Gangtok. But flights to Pakyong are quite less in number. Major airport is at Bagdogra which is well connected with all the major cities. The nearest railway head is at New Jalpaiguri.

From New Jalpaiguri, Yangang is around 118 km by road. From Gangtok it is 53 km. You can hire a vehicle from either Gangtok or Siliguri to Yangang. There are shared jeeps available to Yangang from Gangtok, but they are very less in numbers.
