Nainital: A Mountain Story

There’s always something magical about the hills; a certain kind of calmness that exists there, smoothly takes you away from the busy lives to a different world altogether. This is exactly how I feel each time I travel to Nainital and other mountain wonders in Uttarakhand.

Nainital has a very special place in my heart. It was the first hill station I traveled to from Delhi many, many years back and since then it has become quite a regular experience for me. Whenever I wish to escape from Delhi’s hustle bustle, I head to Nainital. A drive of 6 hours which I usually start as early as possible, brings me to the laps of nature where its beauty is splendid.

Yes, one thing that I need to tell you is that I have always visited this hill station in the off-season – early March, last week of April and even in September. I now have plans to visit in the peak winters.

Nainital has a long list of popular attractions – Naini Lake, Tiffin Top, Naina Devi Temple, High Altitude Zoo, Hanuman Garhi Temple, Eco Cave Gardens, Governor’s House. Khurpa Tal, Sattal, Tibetan Market and Kilbury Bird Sanctuary. You can spend the evenings strolling along the Mall Road which is dotted with shops selling a variety of things and an equal number of eating joints. Bhimtal, Mukteshwar and Sattal are places in close proximity to Nainital and are also a must visit.

Wherever you go, nature will greet you with open arms. The beauty of the hills, greenery, pine trees, steppe farming and the mesmerising views of the Himalayas offer a visual treat to the eyes.

One can enhance the travel experience by indulging in a whole lot of adventures ranging from adrenaline pumping paragliding to quiet fishing activities.

Candle shopping is an important indulgence besides buying souvenirs, Jim Corbett books and other stuff. I also collected a lot of pine cones on my way to Mukteshar. You can enjoy your moments in the hills here much in your own way.
