Nainital is a beautiful hill station in the foothills of Kumaon in the state of Uttarkhand. As the name suggests, Nainital is derived from Naini – Taal or Naini Lake. In fact the entire city is dotted with numerous lakes and of course, being a hill station, offers a magnificent view of the Himalayas. The natural beauty of this city is unparalleled.
The main reason for planning this trip was to escape the hot and humid climate of Kolkata and some relaxation from our hectic schedules; this was the main reason why we choose a place-hopping trip rather selected one destination where we can spend some time together.
We took a train from Kolkata to Kathgodam and from there we took a taxi to Nainital. It was near about an hour’s trip from Kathgodam. We had already booked our stay in a quaint hotel right on mall road overlooking the lake; the hotel we booked had rooms that were all lake-facing. The trip started with the obvious activity – boating at Naini Lake. From there, we took a cable car ride for ‘Himalaya Darshan’. Later in the evening we visited Naini Devi temple.
We planned for a Lake Trip the next day. Nainital is a city of lakes also known as the lake district of India. We went for a tour of Bhimtal (Bhaimtal has an island at its centre), Khurpatal , Naukuchiatal (Tal with nau or 9 corners) and Sattal (Sattal meaning 7 lakes has 7 interconnected lakes, these are Ram Tal, Laxman Tal, Sita Tal, Garuda Tal, Nal-Damyanti Tal, Purna Tal and Sukh Tal). We also visited Hanuman Garhi.
The following day, we planned for a short city tour covering Governor’s House, Eco Cave Gardens (rocky caves in the shape of various animals), Tiffin Top also known as Dorothy’s seat, Snow View Point, Bara Pathar, Lover’s Point, Botanical Garden and waterfall at Sariyatal, Khurpatal and Mansa Devi Temple near Khurpatal.
Next day was reserved for a trip to Mukteshwar – a beautiful hill station at a distance of about 50kms from Nainital. The way to Mukteshwar was pleasant with an abundance of scenic beauty and beautiful valleys. Once we reached, we paid a visit to the Golu devta temple of Ghorakhal also known as a temple of million bells; from there we went to see a nearby tea estate and then to Chauli ki Jali, huge rocky cliffs; from here the view of the valley was just breathtaking.
On these days, we paid a visit to Naini Devi temple on early mornings and spent evenings strolling along the mall road and the lake with a cup of coffee in hand. We also explored market places and restaurants. Mall road remain closed from 6PM to 10PM for vehicles so the evening walks were really peaceful and we thoroughly enjoyed it.
We didn’t want to miss out on Nainital Zoo and on the last day of our trip, we thought of visiting the zoo in the morning, not before paying a final homage to Naina Devi and taking a boat ride. I have visited several zoological parks but Nainital Zoo was something unique. This is a high altitude zoo and most of the time; the place will be covered with fog. The zoo is a meticulously planned one and properly maintained and boasts of various endangered species of animals and high altitude birds. We really loved the place.
Bidding farewell is a difficult thing especially when you enjoy each day so much. We wish to come back again to Nainital.
