Satay

While satay is synonymous with south-east Asian cuisine, it’s at the forefront of an Indonesian diet. It’s simply slices of meat, on a skewer or stick which are grilled on an open fire. You won’t have to look too far to find a satay in Indonesia they are available virtually everywhere. It makes for a perfect snack or even a meal! Your trip wouldn’t be complete if you don’t sample on a satay!

This meal was once a favourite in the royal household, but it is no longer reserved for the monarchy. The champion of this dish is a whole chicken or duck, which is marinated by an assortment of fresh spices and herbs such as garlic, ginger, shallots, peanuts, chillies and lime. It's slow-cooked for around 8 hours and the tender meat just falls off the bone – you’ll feel like royalty tucking into this dish!

Lawar

Lawar is amongst the best Indonesian food in Bali for its versatility and flavour. Traditionally Lawar can be made with any meat available at hand and while pork, chicken, duck or beef are popular, even turtle meat has been used! This dish sings of some of the spices and condiments such as kaffir lime leaves, shrimp paste, galangal, coconut and turmeric.

Babi Guling

Babi Guling in essence is roasted pork, but what makes it special are the local spices used as the marinade. While in the past, it was only prepared for special functions and ceremonies, is now a popular dish amongst the locals. It can be ordered as a tasty side dish with Lawar or enjoyed as a main course, with a side of rice as well!
