Leh Airport: One of the highest altitude airports. It is situated between the Himalayan range and makes for a scenic landing. The airport is controlled by the Indian Army. As is most of Ladakh
One of the oldest and most sacred Buddhist Monastery. It is overwhelming. So is the route that leads upto it. There is a museum depicting the lives of the monks. The Ladakh Hemis Festival takes place here
It is a replica of the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. The picture is as close as I could get to it. Will visit you soon, Thiksey!
The construction of the Stupa began in 1983 and was inaugurated by the 14th Dalai Lama in 1991. The Shanti Stupa was built to promote world peace and prosperity and to commemorate 2500 years of Buddhism. It is considered a symbol of the ties between the people of Japan and Ladakh as both Japanese and Ladakhi Buddhists helped built it. The premises of the Stupa offers spectacular views of the Ladakh and Himalayas.
Also known as Ancient Palace. It has an illustrious history. It is situated atop the highest hill of Leh town and is almost 9 storey high! The construction started in 1553 and was one of the highest buildings in the world of its own times.
The Sangam (Confluence) of River Zanskar and River Sindhu (Indus).Zanskar is a tributary of Indus, a major river in Asia. It is believed, India derived it’s name from this very river.Many rafting expeditions take place here. Zanskar river is also famous for the Chadar Trek that is conducted during winters.
A 6 hour treacherous drive from Leh town and you reach this oh so magical place. Nestled between the mountains, the water changes its colour depending on the position of the sun.25% of the water body lies in India and the rest in China. The water is so so freezing cold, it took me all my guts to get my hand in water. And guess what?! My hand turned RED due to the cold water. Seriously, don’t even try to do that. Ever. How much ever tempting it looks.
The double humped camel of Hunder: A species found only at the northern most part of Ladakh, in Hunder village, few kilometres before the India Pakistan border. The desert of Hunder is suitable for their living. Camel safari is a popular acitivity amongst the locals and tourists alike. Apart from the double hump, most notable difference with other camels is the amount of hair on its body, to protect it from the harsh winds.
Ladakh is blessed with the most beautiful and diverse landscape. The mountains create a dramatic landscape to the birds flying in unison. Bright snow clad mountains. Truly, the most beautiful place on earth.
I can’t be thankful enough for the awesome accommodation done by my travel agent. We stayed at Hotel Omasila, which was the best in all terms. The view of the Himalayas from the porch is breathtaking. We spent hours staring at Himalayas and the night time sky.
