Day 1

Well, this year I desperately wanted a adventurous vacation from the usual boring student Life of mine.
And just to my surprise, a few of my friends did so to.
So five of my friends somehow researched and settled on going to a trek in the Himalayas.
From various places and people we got to know about the Hampta pass trek in Himachal. We watched a few videos, and read a lot about this trek and then decided to do this right after our mid year exams.
So on June 20th we reached Delhi by our flight from Mumbai.
Spent some time in the tibetian colony, majnu ka tila, had good food and then boarded our bus to Manali in the evening. It was back breaking 14hr journey to Manali.
We reached the bus station, took a cab to our hostel in old Manali.

It was a beautiful hostel, with dorms for the six of us. We had our overnight stay there. They arranged for campfire at night and we had a great comfortable sleep, which seemed to be the only good sleep in the whole trip.

Next day morning we freshened up, and left for the place where all trekkers were asked to assemble.
We reached the place by noon, had our lunch and a set of instructions before the trek began.
We boarded a Traveller sumo for a two hour road journey towards the base of the trek.
From this point we started trekking towards the great Hampta pass.

First day of the trek-  Base to Johra
The first part of the trek was calm hike through the forest of tall trees.
It was a trail through the hilly forest and green patches.
We were accompanied by a herd of sheeps and cute dogs.

After about 3 hours of the hike we reached out first camp site and mind you we were already feeling the cold winds.
From here we could see the snow peaks and snow bridges ahead of us. We were offered a cup of hot tea, and snacks to get ourselves warm. We were allotted two tents.
We put on our warm clothes, had our tea and then spent rest of the evening interacting with our fellow trekmates.
Also about the toilet facility, we had a few small toilet tents put up, with pits dug in them. That one thing was the main struggle throughout.
We had our dinner by 9. For a trek we didn't expect much of good food, but to our surprise they had cooked a great meal, with chapatatis, sabzi, rice, dal, papad, pickle, and everything required for the good trek.
We slept in our tents after a short chat, well some of us had to take mild sedative tables to get asleep.
Next day early morning we woke up to our guides shouting for the tea, and breakfast.
Had our breakfast, with poha, tea/coffee/milk ,oats, and yummy pancakes.
We then left the camp site for the journey ahead

Johra-chika
On the second day of our trek, we crossed a few snow bridges, and they do seem risky. Snow bridges are small patches of hardened snow, over small streams, they are always at a risk of breaking.
We crossed a few of those, and wierd gaps between the broken ones. You do need rest in between the treks to catch your breath.

We were always in the company of hairy cute dogs, and never missed our chance to have a picture with them.
They lead you, they follow you around.
We reached out next camp site by 2pm

- Balu ka ghera This campsite was the best for it's scenic view. We had a small streams just behind the tents, and snow clad mountains ahead of us
Had our lunch, then played a few fun group games with the whole group.

Couldn't get calmer

The night at this place was coldest and we had ourselves packed into the warmest of our clothes.
And adding to our troubles, it started raining. The clouds seemed to burst upon us.
We somehow had dinner and ran back into our tents.
That was certainly the toughest night. The tents were moist inside, temperature dropped down with every hour. And this became an nightmare no one imagined.
We had our summit trek the next day, and this wasn't the way we expected it to be. We were supposed to leave early morning for the summit.
But the rains continued next morning too and we had no choice but to wait for the sun to shine.
So by 9-10am the weather cleared a little and we were set to go. We took our small day packs for the summit, Had our ponchos on.
We certainly knew we wouldn't do the summit. People returning from ahead warned us to not try for the summit.
We were then told the weather ahead is worse and it'll be stupid to go for the summit.
So we then did 200m trek to a lake on the way.
This was a lake formed amidst the huge mountains, covered all around with snow.

We were busy clicking pictures as this was the last part of the trek, just when we felt the drizzle.
At first we thought it would snow for a bit and it'll a great sight to be. But soon we realized it was a hailstorm over us and we had to leave the place soon.
We did run back for a while with almost zero visibility ahead.
Soon we reached back near our campsite.
Although the way back, we found ourselves falling I'm the snow, and breaking a few snow bridges.
Soon we reached our campsites, took our backpacks and left for the descend.

Around you always

On our last descend we did a short photo session of the group.
We clicked pictures with the guides too. We also interacted with a few of the guides and understood how they live throughout the year, while trekking and leaving their families back at home. They shared a few near death experiences of theirs and their fellowmates.
This trek was indeed a push out from our comfort zones.
We learned how to adjust with whatever you have.
These five days thought is how to be mentally strong when the conditions aren't the best. Enjoying the best of what you get. And also how to get a snow burn over your nose.

Flight to Delhi for around 4ooors, booked a month ago.

Took a cab to metro, and the boarded a metro to Majnu ka tila.

Had lunch at A.M.A cafe

Boarded a bus to Manali from the same place.
About 1500 each for the bus, it's a semi sleeper.

Took a cab to old Manali , 300-400 for 4 seater cab.

Stay at this hostel. Booked a 6 bed dorm for 600 each per day.
Good food, great view, great hospitality.

The whole trip, from Mumbai to Mumbai costed me around 30000rs.
This included my 3 days in Manali where I spent a lot on good food.
We booked the trek through Renok adventures for 9000 per head.
