In the seventeenth century when Mughal Emperor Jahangir came to Kashmir, it was him who said this famous Persian couplet after getting mesmerised by the beauty of Kashmir.
We all know that Kashmir is beautiful, breath-taking, exotic, amazing. Everyone wants to travel to Kashmir to see the snow-capped mountains, lush green meadows, glacial streams and majestic lakes. However, there is much more to Kashmir than that.
Kashmir is also called as “pir waer” in the local language, which translates into- “the valley of saints”. Spirituality has left an indelible mark on the soil of Kashmir valley. There are hundreds of sufi shrines (dargahs) in the Kashmir valley. In the city of Srinagar itself, one can spot a shrine in almost every area. Some of the main shrines and mosques are located in the old city of Srinagar which are easily accessible by taxis, auto rickshaws and local mini buses. Those who travel to Kashmir and want to experience the sufi culture, the essence of old city, it’s heritage and culture should definitely visit these places.
Asaari Sharif, Hazratbal: Located in the Hazratbal area of Srinagar, facing the famous Dal lake, this mosque is the holiest of all the shrines in Kashmir. Hazratbal mosque is locally known as Dargah. It is situated near the University of Kashmir and NIT, Srinagar Campus. The mosque derives its significance from the fact that it houses a holy hair (relic) of the Prophet Muhammad.
2. Khankahi Shah-i-Hamdan: Locally known as Khankah is located in the Khankah area of the old city, adjacent to the localities of Fateh Kadal and Zaina Kadal. This shrine is situated by the river Jhelum which flows through the Srinagar city. This mosque was built after Mir Syed Ali Hamdani’s visitis to Kashmir from Iran. His contribution to the Kashmiri society is immense by introducing new arts and crafts in Kashmir. The building is entirely made of wood and it is said to have been constructed without using any nails. The beautiful paintings and the wood carvings is something that will catch your eye.

Located in the Khanyar area of the city, this shrine is named after Sheikh Syed Abdul Qadir Jeelani popularly known as Dastgeer, this shrine houses an old Quran written by two very influential companions of Prophet Muhammad and a piece of holy hair of Dastgeer Sahib.
This historical mosque is situated at Nowhatta area of the old city. It was built by Sultan Sikandar Shah Kashmiri Shahmiri in 1394 AD. The mosque has a magnificent courtyard and it stands on 370 deodar pillars. There is a certain peace and tranquillity inside it which one can experience irrespective of the hustle of the old bazaars around it.
This shrine (tomb) is named after Hamza Makhdoom Kashmiri, popularly known as Makhdoom Sahib who was a Sufi mystic, scholar and spiritual teacher. He is also known as Mehboob-ul-Alam (lover of knowledge) and Sultan-ul-Arifeen (king of those who know God). The shrine is located on the southern flank of Hari Parbat Hill. The famous Mughal Fort (Hari Parbat Fort) is located atop this hill. One can experience a birds eye view of the old city from the fort.
All these places are visited by people of all faiths. Located close to the city centre, these places are easily accessible with all of them at a distance of 5-6 Kms from the city centre of Lal Chowk.
