After 15years this is my second trip to Kanyakumari. It has remarkably changed over the years, and it’s definitely not the Kanyakumari that I saw as a child.The essence of the place is the same but it’s much more commercialized now.
At the southernmost part of India is Kanyakumari, a place of scenic beauty and breath taking architecture. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations of South India. It is the perfect place to see sunrise and also to observe the waters of Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. The beauty of this place lies in its wealthy cultural heritage, ancient temples, multi-colored sands and dramatic sunsets and sunrises.
Considered as the “Golden Tip of India”, the city has beautifully planned architectural. In the form of sightseeing some renowned options are Thiruvalluvar Statue, Vivekananda Rock Memorial, Kanyakumari Temple, Padmanabhapuram Palace, Vattakottai Fort, Kanyakumari Beach, Sanguthurai Beach, Thirparappu Waterfalls, and Chothavilai Beach.
Triveni Sangam.
Kanyakumari happens to overlook a point in the sea that shows meeting of Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean together,hence also known as ““Triveni Sangam”.
Gandhi Memorial!
The visit at the Gandhi Memorial afterwards was satisfying, as the view was great from the top. It was constructed in the place where Ganghiji’s ashes were kept for public darshan before immersion in the sea. The Mantapam is built in Orrisa style of architecture and designed in such a way that on his birthday, 2 October, the rays of the sun, through a hole on the roof, falls exactly on the place where the urn was kept.
The crowd is the only disadvantage!
The Vivekananda Rock Memorial is built in honor of Indian spiritual leader Swami Vivekananda, who is believed to have swam from the mainland to this rock and meditated here, during his visit to Kanyakumari. It was built in 1970 and since then has attracted crowds in huge numbers.
Boat Jetty.
The memorial is open every day (except national holidays) from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. It takes a ferry ride from the mainland to the rock memorial, which runs regularly till the memorial is open. Arriving by the ferry on the rock memorial, one can either go inside the main square hall, where there is a solitary statue of Swami Vivekananda or enjoy the views outside. I loved the views of the ocean from the rock memorial and had it not for the crowds, it would have been a lovely experience sitting on the rock for some more time.
