Recently, i have visited one my friends who is a nuclear scientist working at Kudamkulam nuclear power plant. ( It will be the largest in India once it commences operation). After a thrilling visit of the power plant,we set out to visit Kanyakumari which is only 16kms away from the site. Kanyakumari is a place well known to tourists across india and is the only place in the country where one can witness sunrise and sunset from the same spot. However, Kanyakumari has become too overcrowded with tourists and hawkers alike. So I made up a quick plan for a road trip without any particular destination. (250 kms to and fro was the plan).
I was at the starting point of Golden Quadrilateral, the network of freeways which connects all metros in India. I started off from Kanyakumari around 4pm. This route has the highest number of wind turbines. You can imagine a freeway though the hillocks adorned with windmills of various types. It was quite a refreshing ride especially in the evening.
Around 60 kms further from Kanyakumari is a place called Tirunnelveli. Somewhere near tirunnelveli ,is a hillock which is cut in half to accommodate the freeway creating a picturesque view from atleast 2-3 kms away. It is sure to capture everyone’s attention owing to its symmetry. I pulled over near the hillock and chose to climb one of those. It was full of rocks and also embedded with bushes full of thorns. I scraped my hand a few times at the start. So I climbed the rest with much care. I was also concerned about the possibility of some snakes as the terrain resembled those which Vipers will love. However, after half an hour i reached the peak and the sight was ravishing.
There were plains all around. This hillock seemed to be the only one within a 10km radius. Tirunnelveli town was seen from far now adorned with lights as it was becoming dark. The windmills were all lighted up. Their rotating blades were cutting the lights and this made them glitter. It seemed like stars spread on the plains. It was like the reflection of a sky full of stars. The road was also seen stretching out to a few miles to both side of the hillock. I sat there at the peak until it was dark.
I wanted to sit there for long but the weird thoughts of typical Hollywood rattle snakes had cut my plans short. I quickly descended towards the road side where i have parked my car.
The road trip which did not have any destination originally ended up being one of the best places I have visited. This hillock have no particular name yet. So i call it ‘The Twin hillocks of Tirunelveli’
P.S. I recommend all those adventures who visit Kanyakumari to explore this hill. It is a 3-4 hours drive to and fro from Kanyakumari. It may not be suitable for family or couples seeking honeymoon spots.
