If you are planning a trip to Kerala, you might come across some green initiatives in the popular touristy areas. The land of Gods, Kerala is planning to promote sustainable and green initiatives. This project to promote green and sustainable tourism will be implemented by RT Mission along with the cooperation of local self-government bodies.
Tourists visiting the 'Responsible Tourism (RT) Mission Packages' at various destinations will be encouraged to travel green. They will be offered e-auto and bicycle safaris. The Responsible Tourism Mission will be offering tour packages which include Village Life Experiences, Festival packages and Cultural Experiences.
Kerala will focus on areas which are emerging tourist destinations to promote green and sustainable tourism
In this initiative to promote sustainable and green tourism, Kerala will focus on areas which are emerging tourist destinations adjacent to backwaters, beaches, and rivers in the State. The tourists will also be encouraged to opt for green options like e-auto and bicycle safaris.
Rupesh Kumar, State Coordinator of the RT Mission said, "The Mission had an ambitious plan to implement an RT protocol in all the destinations as part of ensuring economic and environmental responsibility.
We cannot switch to green travel all of a sudden, but the Mission is hopeful of nudging a certain percent of tourists who visit under the Responsible Tourism packages to travel green by promoting e-autos and bicycling by empowering local women groups in selected destinations,” said Mr, Kumar.
Tourists will be encourage to plant a sapling of tree
E-auto was distributed to selected beneficiaries in Kadalundi in Kozhikode and cycles at Kumarakom. He added more such destinations would be covered under this project. The RT Mission will give financial assistance to select women groups to buy e-autos.
Tourists visiting under the responsible tourism packages will be encouraged to plant a sapling of tree as part of creating memories with the destination. With the aim to plant 1,000 trees in the first phase, the State government had sanctioned one lakh rupees.
"This was a baby step towards a clean destination, at a time when the world was becoming more and more aware of the threats faced due to climate change and global warming," said Mr. Kumar.
