If you are in Pune between July - October, you must make a day trip to Kaas Plateau to truly enjoy the monsoon landscape of Maharashtra!
The plateau in the later part of the monsoon (September- October) becomes a spectacular bed of flowers, but even in the earlier months of the monsoon the plateau is an absolute delight.
We booked a cab ( Toyota Innova) and left Pune at 7am. We stopped midway at a small dhaba to devour some local delicacies ( misal pav, vada pav, sabudana wada and more!) and reached the plateau by 11.30 to be greeted by a light but steady drizzle. Our first view of the landscape is below!
We took the car upto a point, after which we saw a small trail heading towards the Vajrai waterfall. We parked the car at a nearby parking spot and started walking down this trail towards the waterfall, but nothing could prepare us for the magnificent waterfall we were about to witness!

The Vajrai waterfall is the second highest plunge fall in India, and is split into 3 layers, that finally end at the Kaas Lake. From the plateau you can see the lake and a side view of the waterfall. A separate 3 hour trek can take you closer to the falls, but we’d recommend a guide a for this!
As we walked down that slightly slushy path, Mahesh and I looked at each other with wide grins on our faces! Kaas Plateau wasn’t a glamorous touristy spot. It was peaceful, with a few more people sharing the landscape with us and just this made us so very happy to be there!
If you’d like to visit Kaas, here are something to keep in mind:
1. Ticket: There is an entry fee of 100 rupees per person
2. Food: There aren’t many places to eat within a one hour vicinity, however there are plenty of places to eat on the way
3. Things to carry: If there is a forecast of rain, definitely carry an umbrella/ raincoat and a few plastic bags for phones and camera
4. What to wear: Wear shoes or sandals that have a good grip and comfortable clothing that you can walk in.
5. How to reach: The best way to reach from Pune / Satara is to drive in our opinion.
