Have you ever Wondered going on a solo trek without all the hustle in a group yearning for some tranquility?
Annapurna Base Camp trek is one such trek which gives rewarding views and can be done solo without any problem.Lets see how i conquered my dream of going on a solo himalayan trek.
Since i live in Guwahati, Nepal border kakarvitta is nearer to me and easy to reach from NJP railways station.one can easily find buses plying from NJP railway station to kakarvitta town .it costs merely 20rs for the bus. There are direct buses from kakarvitta to Pokhara in the Early morning around 5 and 6am or in the evening around 3.30 to 4pm.
After reaching the border, you can find lot of money exchange shops.Exchange your cash with Nepali Rupees the exchange rate is around 0.6INR=1NPR.
After you are done with exchanging, first buy a bus ticket to Pokhara which costs around 700 NPR.Be ready for the bumpy ride.I recommend you to take early morning bus ,so that you can rest in pokhara for the night and start the trek next day.
I couldn't catch early morning bus ,so i took overnight bus and reached early in the morning around 6am.
The next step is to attain trekking permits .you can find shared autos and buses to immigration office from the drop point.Go to the office and fill in the required details and get your TIMS card which costs 1000NPR for indians and 4000NPR for foreign nationals.carry 3 passport photos and required ID cards(voter card, passport).
Nayapul is the starting point of the most of the Annapurna Base Camp Trek. Local transportation (bus) is available from Pokhara to get to Nayapul. It takes about 2 hours to reach Nayapul from Pokhara.Reach as early as possible to Nayapul. It gets dark around 5pm.
After getting my permits ,i reached nayapul and started trekking. You can find a lot of villages and homestays in between.I reached Ghandruk around 6pm and i had freshly cooked yummy daal bhat which is a basic food available everywhere .it costs around 400NPR.You can find pizzas too if you can spend some more😛
TIP: Trade your stay for your dinner and breakfast at the homestay if you are on tight budget.stay costs around 200NPR if you are sharing the room.
The next day i started early in the morning, i had some juice and biscuits which i brought with me and started trekking towards Jhinu.I wanted to stay in Jhinudanda as there are hotsprings over there.i reached Jhinudanda around 3pm and had lunch and went to chill out in the hotsprings.I spent the rest of the day chilling out in hotsprings and looking at the sunset over the mountains.I had a good sleep after the bath in hotsprings.
The next day after a good sleep, i started out early in the morning towards Chhomrong. After hiking a very steep trail to Chhomrong ,i am disappointed to hear a bad news.Base camp is closed due to heavy snowfall and i couldnt even go till Bamboo. With a heavy heart i had to change my plans. So i planned to connect to Poon Hill trail and started trekking in dense forest towards Tadapani.I took a homestay and stayed there for a night.I spent the evening looking at Machapuchare (Fish Tail)mountain from the balcony.
The next day i started early as the trail is snowy which takes a lot of time and strains us a lot.So i started trekking towards Ghorepani .After a steep trail ,the snowly trail started.Equipped only with a trekking stick and no crampons, oh god i almost saved from slipping into the freezing river sideby. The trail is completely snowy and slippery till Ghorepani. This trail made me forget all the disappointment caused due to blockage of base camp. This is one hell of a trail with views of beautiful panaromic views of annapurna.I have reached Ghorepani earlier than i assumed and i wanted to trek back to nayapul in the hope of finding vehicle to Pokhara. In the way to Ghorepani i met a guy who happens to be working nearby my College. We both started trekking down and its dark by the time we are 3km away from nayapul. But hope has its own way, we found a scorpio who is going to Pokhara. He offered us to take with him till Pokhara. We reached Pokhara within 2hrs .We stayed in Gaurilankesh backpacker hostel which is quite affordable (200NPR in shared dorm).
The next day we explored phewa lake side and returned to NJP.So a disappointed trek turned a happy one through another way.One thing I learned is MOUNTAINS NEVER DISAPPOINT US.
