Trip starts from NJP(train) or Bagdogda(flight). It was a 4-5 hour journey to Gangtok. The roads are really nice. I am sure you will enjoy your ride through the Sevok road which is a long stretch of road with teak plantations on both sides. After that starts the winding roads as you climb up alongside river Tista. On your right you will see the huge Coronation bridge which stands as a huge arch over the river valley. You will cross a checkpost at Rongpo which is the entry to Sikkim. In another hour from there you would reach Gangtok.
Modes of transport: Book a car , Share jeep, Bus. (4-5 hours journey)
You can rest on that day and roam about on MG road. Do some shopping at Lal market and enjoy steaming momos.
Make sure to get up early and if you are lucky you might see the Kanchenjunga peak from your balcony or rooftop. Enjoy your morning tea with a panaromic view of mountain ranges. On that day you can do a local tour from Gangtok. You got monasteries like Rumtek, Pemayangste which are located within 50kms. You got some view points like Honuman Tok, Ganesh tok to get a view of the landscape and the Gangtok city from a distance. You might also see a couple of waterfalls alongside the road.
Next day make your way to Tsangu lake early in the morning to avoid any rush on the way. Road to Tsangu is quite steep and it gets really cold by the time you reach there. On a single 3 hour journey you climb to 12000ft. Enjoy a cup of tea or coffee or a thukpa in that chilly environment. You can go ahead further to Nathu La which denotes a border for India and China.
Make your way to North Sikkim. As you go north you reach a bifurcation at Chunthang. One road leads to Lachen another to Lachung. Move towards Lachen and reach there before nightfall as the road is too dangerous to drive at night.
Early next morning (before 5am) leave for Gurudongmar Lake. It takes around 3 hours to reach there. It is semi or completely frozen lake depending on the time you visit surrounded by cold desert. The topography is similar to that of Ladakh. The view is awesome as the mountains and glaciers surround the lake. The water is ice cold if not frozen and is crystal clear. It is very pious to the people over there. The height of the lake is 17000ft and this place has a deficiency in oxygen levels. Try to remain calm and do not get excited and run when you reach that place. The air is heavy and it is better to be cautious. People with high pressure or respiratory should avoid this place.
Return to Lachen by noon and then leave for Lachung as early as possible to reach on time. In the evening we sat beside the river on the boulders and made a bonfire at night.
Next day we travelled to Yumthang valley. It is a beautiful river valley with steep lush green mountains going up. During March , April the valley is completely filled with rhododendrons. It becomes really colourful and bright. From there you can go further north to Yamesedong or Zero point. Here you can have a lot of fun over snow. After you are done head straight back for a long route to Gangtok.
