Cultivation of grapes dates back to 1600 in South Africa. Now, there are large estates and every winery seems to offer cosy accommodation, fine dining, casual bistros, gourmet wine pairings and elaborate tastings.

South Africa represents young generation of winemakers that are producing better and better wines, not just the classic chenin blanc and robust pinotage, but complex bordeaux blends, elegant shiraz and what the locals would call seriously "quaffable" bubbly.

I happened to visit one of the most picturesque wine route that ever exist : Stellenbosch. Life in Stellenbosch can be luxurious with plethora of sophisticated accomodations and lavish offerings for those who enjoy finer things in life. On the other hand there are more affordable bed and breakfast boutique types accomodations also available to fit every budget or you can even do a day trip like I did.

Stellenbosch is divided into 5 sub routes based on prominent wine style, climatic and geographical location. You can see the map to make travelling along the route more easy.

I visited the 1692 Spier Vineyard.

Wine tasting amidst stunning views of Helderberg mountains. You can picnic in the farm with a fresh picnic basket hamper made available by the Spier. Segway tour : Best way to explore the vineyard is by segway. Breeze through the balmy summer evening and watch the sunset over the mountains. Restaurant : Enjoy a meal from fresh garden produce at the Eight restaurant amongst rolling gardens. Spier Artisan Studio : it's a ceramic and mosaic studio where you can see South African artisans in action. Craft Market : You can buy unique mementos and special gift from here. Shipping can also be arranged. Spa : There are full fledged spa services available at Spier hotel.
