In this era of fast-paced and busy life, everyone is in a rush that seems to never end. I used to choose any tourist place when I wanted to take some of my busy days off where I can relax and enjoy. That is a totally a good option but let me tell you why trekking should be on your bucket list.

I am a mountain person. I just love everything about about hills - clear blue sky, lush green forests, snow capped hills, fresh air and peace. I went on my first trek 2 years back to Kheerganga, it changed my perspective about life. Here are some realisations I had about trekking that I had along the way.

1. It seems far until you take the first step

I always used to go on leisure vacays, but this time thought to give trekking a chance. Kheerganga was my first trek, and it was challenging for me. My body did not expected hardships that I suddenly hurdled on it and neither was I mentally prepared for it. But more I trekked along, pushed myself ahead, ignoring the pains and sickness, the easier it got for me to walk ahead.

Moving out of your comfort zone and getting ready for the challenges as they come, pushing yourself beyond your normal limits, and shouting in your mind that you are capable of achieving what you want - is what it taught me.

2. You fail only if didn't try

You can't succeed if you didn't tried. I slowly began to see things differently beyond the hardships and discomforts that nature bestowed upon me. I started to observe more, feel more and see the beauty of things around. That was the first time I realized how many other things I was capable of doing if only I tried. Crossing difficult paths by gathering that courage all by myself is one thing that I will carry with myself forever.

3. Listen to your inner voice

What to do when you are stuck at some point all by yourself. You motivate yourself that you can do it or you have to do it. Gathering that courage to get yourself out of that situation is going to help you all your life. There are points where multiple paths are leading to the top, and you have to decide which path is the correct one - and for that you have to listen to your inner voice and at most times it leads you to the correct way.

4. Rise above yourself

We are so engrossed in our own world, with our problems and we just can't see beyond ourselves. There's a bigger world ahead that awaits you. When we are exposed to rough terrains, away from our comfort zone, and see the local tribes living with the basic amenities and yet being happy and full of life, that I wonder whether the Glass is half full or half empty?

5. Experience Mother Nature raw

Trekking connects you with the nature. Imagine no buildings, no shops, no concrete, it's only you and the mother nature. That sight can be life changing. While trekking, you can explore some hidden gems and feel the beauty of it. Walking that extra mile to see that beauty is all worth it. Just imagine, Trekking up to the top of hill - with gentle breezy weather - with view of mountains, valley - and finding peace in there with just you and the nature.

6. Get yourself out of that monotonous schedule

Tired of your monotonous schedule? Trekking is the solution. Trekking gets you to a drastically different life zone altogether: it’s slow, silent, and untouched. Have you ever experienced your body feeling excited, scared, and immensely joyful at the same time? If not, you need to pack your bags right now and trek up.

7. Taking a break is okay

While trekking, there comes a point when you are tired and taking a break becomes essential. Do not hesitate to take a break. Give yourself sometime to gather that strength, and start again fresh with the energy gathered. Nature boosts you to an extent you cannot imagine. This will certainly prove useful in the journey of life as well.

8. Get yourself out of the comfort zone

Sleeping in tents in sleeping bags instead of those super comfy bed, filling your stomach with Maggi and biscuits instead of that full plate yummy meal, adjusting as per the availability of things are some challenges that you have to face but they are equally adventurous. Most of us are happy being in our comfort zone. While you embark on a high altitude trek, you gotta be prepared for all the surprises that the nature has planned for you. While on one of my trek, some days were beautiful filled with lush green valleys, while on other days it rained heavily, evenings being chilly and nights being toughest to trek in the torch light. But eventually, everything will fall in place.

9. Every small thing in life should be cherished

We often forget to show love when we are caught up in the hustle and bustle of city life. We have a tendency to take things for granted and rarely express our gratitude to those who deserve it. However, when we are in the mountains and have to survive on the bare necessities, we tend to look back at all the good things we had previously ignored. Time and again, I've realised that the best things in life are priceless, regardless of how much money you have.

10. It's not just about the destination, it's about the journey

Its never just about the destination, but it's always about the journey. Trek, not just to reach the destination, but to enjoy the beauty of the trail, collect a bucket full of memories, listen to your heartbeat, live in the present, make yourself more independent, learn the meaning of humanity, check your fitness level, and to make your life better.

Being in the mountains always brings out the best in people! When you're in the Himalayas, you realise how small, mortal, and vulnerable you are. Darker days will pass, and we will be stronger as a result. Happy days will come knocking, and we must remember that they will not last forever.
