Good news is awaiting the Indian tourism sector as Varanasi gears up to be the first Indian city to initiate ropeway services in public transportation. It will also be the world's third public transport ropeway.

As per the recent news report, Isha Duhan, the Vice-Chairman of the Varanasi Development Authority, stated, “India will be the third country in the world after Bolivia and Mexico City, and Varanasi will be the first city to use a ropeway for public transport”. She also added that the ropeway project is being designed and developed as per the technicalities of Kyoto in Japan.

Varanasi is one of the religious places in India, frequented by thousands of devotees and pilgrims. The ropeway will enable ease of travel to Kashi Vishwanath Temple and Dashashwamedh Ghat; the two prominent locations in Varanasi.

Besides the ropeway services are planned to bring relief to the traffic jams and congestion in the city; thus enabling faster movement, saving of time and money. Tourists and pilgrims can travel faster through the entire city and visit the different sightseeing spots. The Vice-Chairman of the Varanasi Development Authority informed that all the stations along the line of the ropeway service will provide a glimpse of Kashi’s art, religion and culture.

All you need to know

There will be 220 trolleys that will operate at a height of about 45 meters. Almost 4,000 people can travel one way at a time. Each of the cable cars will be able to accommodate 10 seats. The cars will run at a time gap varying between 90 seconds and 120 seconds. The services will be operational even at night.

The Varanasi ropeway service is planned to be constructed from Cantt Railway Station (Varanasi Junction) to Church Square (Godauliya). The main terminus will be at Cantt railway station and the other important stations will be at Sajan Tiraha, Rathyatra, and Girjaghar (Godowlia) crossings. Each ropeway station will be equipped with escalators.

The total cost of the project is approximately INR 424 crore, covering an aerial distance of 4.2 km. The cost of the project will be divided between the Centre and the state government at a ratio of 80:20. The project will be executed in a public-private partnership model. The one way travelling time has been estimated to be about 15 minutes.

As per the statement issued by Divisional commissioner Deepak Agrawal, "Each cable car will have 10 seats. These cars will move in a gap of 90 seconds. As per the final alignment, the main terminus will be at the Cantt railway station while other stations will be at Sajan, Rathyatra, and Girjaghar (Godowlia) crossings. A turning line will be created between Cantt railway station and Sajan crossing.”
