When I first heard about Mandu, I thought it would be a regular historical place with a typical new and old city parts, palaces and lakes, but it surprised me as a traveller and one can't ask more as there is no dearth of sites which will take you in an era of pomp and galore. Mandu group of monuments were built during medieval and ancient times. Various monuments are of indo-islamic- Afghani architecture and therefore Mandu is also called "little Afghan city" of India. It is believed that if there are better monuments than Delhi and Agra, it is in Mandu. This is a place which inspired many more historical monuments built in our country, the Taj Mahal is one of them.
The journey from Indore to Mandu is around 110k.m and the Mumbai-Indore highway is at its greenish best in rainy season. You will love the journey as much as the destination itself.
Kakar Kho
This is point of a waterfall just before you enter Mandu, the view is breathtakingly delightful. Just near this site is a children park which has a museum also showing geographical history
Jehaz Mahal
This is named so because of its shape. It looks as if a mighty ship is standing on a bank of large water body.
Hindola Mahal
The architecture reminds of some greek structure. this palace was for entertainment where dancers used to show their talent.
Jama masjid
the place of worship of king. the monument just opposite to mosque is equally historical and gives a beautiful view of fields
Hoshang Tomb
The structure which became inspiration for our very own Taj Mahal.
Rani Roopmati Pavollian
the mightiest of them all is rani roopmati pavollian. the story behind this monument is religiously romantic. rani would agree to marry prince baj bahadur only if he could make a palace for him which would enable her to worship sacred narmada. and the result is what we see today, a breathtaking view of narmada river from the top of palace.
Nilkantheshwar Temple
if we have mosque we also have temple, the old temple has carvings written in urdu which is rare, unlike other temples which are genrally on top of hill, this temple is built below a small waterfall. Beware of langurs as there are many to snatch your food. the area around the temple is delightful.
