About the property
Run by a local couple, Geeta and Raj Pant, Avocados B&B is has a rich history. The B&B is also the family’s ancestral home and dates back to the early 1900s. The family recently decided to give the heritage property a new life, building a unique ‘A-structure’ studio villa. And that’s how Avocados B&B was born.
The two-storeyed property stands majestically on the foothills of Bhimtal in Uttarakhand. Surrounded by colourful orchards, avocado trees and water springs that remain hidden from conventional tourists, Avocados is the ultimate place to reconnect with nature. And if that weren’t enough, the villa offers stunning views of the Bhimtal Lake!
As for the interiors, Avocados B&B is all about class and simplicity, reminding you of home. The ground floor of the villa has a tastefully done up living area that comes with a cosy bed-cum-sofa, to laze around with your travel partner. Additionally, there is also a small pantry where guests can put their cooking skills to test. I was particularly drawn to the fireplace that Mr Pant was kind enough to set it up for us in no time, and it turned out to be exactly what we needed on a rainy winter evening.
A small flight of wooden stairs will lead you to the villa’s first floor, the bedroom. Much like the living area, the bedroom also exudes an intimate vibe. In addition to the cosy double bed, the first floor also has a reading corner by the window. I kid you not, it’s one of those spots where you just sit endlessly and let time take its own course.
Food
Prepared meticulously by members of the Pant family, the meals at Avocados are simple yet extremely flavourful. The vegetarian set meals at the property perfectly balance taste and nutrition. To make things even better, all meals here are cooked using farm-fresh vegetables, which includes produce from the kitchen garden!
And just in case you’re in the mood to explore, walk down to the lake and dine at one of the local restaurants. FYI, the rajma-chawal and kadhi-chawal in the entire belt are to die for!
Cost
A stay at Avocados B&B will cost you Rs 5,000 per night, for double accommodation. Provisions for a maximum of two additional adults can also be made at Rs 1,000 per person.
Best time to go
Bhimtal has pleasant weather for most of the year, making it a destination of all seasons. If you’re looking for an escape from the blistering heat in the plains, plan a trip between April and June. On the other hand, November to February is a great time to experience the chilly Himalayan winds. Bhimtal also experiences torrential rains between July and October which turns the town into a lush green dreamland. However, make sure you check on the condition of roads before you set out on a monsoon trip.
Things to do in and around the property
1. Get some fresh air
One of the best things you can do while staying at Avocados B&B is to just sit back and admire the beauty of nature around. The homestay’s first floor has a lake view balcony where guests can soak in the sun. Additionally, you can also spend your time here by chilling in the backyard and taking a stroll through the avocado and kiwi plantations.
2. Spend a day by the lake
A popular tourist attraction amongst people visiting the region, Bhimtal Lake is a short walk’s distance from Avocados B&B. Take a day out to have a lakeside picnic and you won’t be one bit disappointed. Take the experience to the next level by trying your hands at fishing, taking a boat ride in the lake and visiting the Bhimtal Aquarium.
3. Test your paragliding skills!
A 3 km drive from Avocados B&B will get you to Naukuchiatal, a criminally underrated adventure destination. Start your day by taking a dirt bike out for a spin on unexplored trails. Next, hit the lake to indulge in water sports such as kayaking and water zorbing. End the day with paragliding over the valley as the sun goes down.
4. Plan a day trip to Nainital
If you’re someone who has a thing for all things touristy, make sure you go on a day trip to Nainital while staying at Avocados B&B. The homestay is an hour’s drive (25 km) from the popular hill station. Spend you day in Nainital by shopping at the Mall Road, exploring the Naini Lake, trekking to Tiffin Top and watching the sunset from Cheena Peak.
Getting there
Here’s how you can reach Bhimtal from New Delhi:
By road: One can simply drive down the NH9 to get from New Delhi to Bhimtal. It takes about eight hours to cover this distance of 300 km.
By air: There are daily, direct flights starting at Rs 4,500 that connect New Delhi to Pantnagar. Avocados B&B is located 60 km from the airport, a distance that can be covered in two hours in a local taxi.
By train: Alternatively, one can also take a chair car train from New Delhi to Kathgodam, the nearest railhead to Bhimtal. Avocados B&B is an hour’s drive from the railway station (45 km).
