Home to the seventh wonder of the world, the Taj Mahal, Agra is best explored on foot or rickshaw or a rented bike. Renowned worldwide as not only a mausoleum but an epitome of love, the Taj Mahal is profusely crowded during the day till evening. If you're looking to escape the crowd, however, the city's Mughal beauty can be enjoyed from several rooftops and secret locations in the city, or at an early morning yoga session just 100 metres away from the monument. If you want to go further, why not go into the depths of its history through the light and sound shows and plays at the Kalakriti Cultural and Convention Centre. Agra annually hosts the 10-day festival, Taj Mahotsav, a rostrum for culture and colour in the month of February, known for celebrity performances, food stalls and a creative congregate of about 400 artisans across the country showcasing their exquisite art and craft items. Agra easily competes with Delhi's Mughlai monopoly with decade old restaurants such as Bilal Restaurant and Hyderabad Handi, while the Agra cant area houses local food. Speaking of local, Korai village remains a lesser known location, which can give you an entirely different experience and a chance to interact with villagers. Travelling through this beautiful necropolis, one can also enjoy quiet spots, wholesome with nature such as the Keertham Lake and the Sur Sarovar Bird Sanctuary, before signing off with a visit to the Agra Fort, I'timad-Ud-Daulah (also known as baby Taj), Chini Ka Raza and Akbar's Tomb, architectural tributes to Mughal history, admired above and beyond India.

The fortified city is a great place for history buffs, photographers and explorers. Though two days here may be a bit much, you can easily spend a day here exploring its many treasures. Do visit Panch Mahal and the Buland Darwaza located within the city. If you'd like to hire a tour guide, do make sure you have a conversation with him before hand, lest you are pulled into a tour without any information. If possible, do also speak to locals there, just in case there are a few spots you can explore besides the popular sightseeing spots. For foodies, the Lake View Resort is a great option to enjoy an afternoon amidst nature and delicious food. Should you have more time on your hands, do also visit Sikri and the lively bazaar below Fatehpur Sikri. Situated close to the vibrant city of Jaipur, Alwar is a perfect weekend getaway. Home to the wonderful Sariska Tiger Reserve, the grand City Palace and the stunning Siliserh Lake, Alwar offers you a mix of history, architecture and nature. Though the Sariska Tiger Reserve is perhaps the best way to spend your time in Alwar, you can also spend a little time exploring the lake and Government Museum. When visiting the reserve, do book a safari in advance lest you miss out on a great slot. Early mornings and early evenings are the best way to explore the reserve. Boasting of tigers, including the Bengal Tiger, the reserve is home to the Indian Leopard, Indian Jackal, Sambhar and Wild Boars. Of course, you'll also spot monkeys making a ruckus and a crowd of Neelgais and that is quite fun to watch as well. Avoid eating anything while on the safari since it's a strict no. The Siliserh Lake is another lovely spot where you can indulge in a bit of boating and a delicious lunch. The food here is a bit on the expensive side but it's totally worth it. While here, you can also take a trip to City Palace. You may feel that there are tons of palaces around Rajasthan that are way more beautiful, but this one has its own charm. Away from the chaos of the main city, it offers you a respite from dilapidated, ill maintained forts. Do try food at one of the restaurants in the city. Not only is the food delicious, the hospitality is warm and adds to the meal.

If you are looking for a rejuvenating getaway from the capital city of Delhi, Bharatpur is a great option. Very well known for Keoladeo National Park, this small town has become home to a number of homestays and guesthouses. Perfect for a couple of days to experience a mix of adventure, history and hospitality, Bharatpur is a welcome change from other crowded weekend spots. Though the best time to visit this town is during winter, early summer is a great option as well. Make sure you book your guesthouse in advance lest you miss out on a great staying option. The Keoladeo National Park is huge and will take you an entire day to explore it. Cars are not allowed inside the park, but you can either hire a bicycle or a rickshaw to take a look around the park. Cycling gives you the opportunity to discover small corners and nooks that rickshaws can't take you to. The park is perfect for birdwatchers and also wonderful to explore for photographers and nature lovers. There is not much to eat inside the park besides a few snacks, coffee and tea. Do have a meal before you head inside the park. Besides the park, you can spend the afternoon at Bharatpur National Museum or Deeg Palace. If you are short on time, you can choose to spend a little time here and most of your time at the park. Hotel Sonar Haveli is a great place to stay if you are in the mood for a luxurious holiday, or Jungle Lodge if you are looking for some quiet time.
