Built in the 17th century, spread over 40 acres, Bekal Fort is the largest fort in Kerala. It was built by the Nayakas of Keladi, one of the prominent Kannada dynasties that rose after the decline of the Great Vijayanagara empire in the 16th century. It's easy to appreciate the strategic location of this fort looming upon the rough Arabian Sea.

We visited the Bekal fort in monsoon with an overcast throughout the day. In contrary to what you'd think, that is actually a blessing. Kerala's coastline is known for extremely hot and humid weather but the overcast during monsoon gives you the much needed respite from the scorching heat of the sun and you can enjoy the mystic ambiance up at the fort when. The fort is surrounded by the sea on both sides making it one of the best structures for a panoramic view. While the fort in itself is decapitated and is just a shadow of its former grandeur, there has been some recent efforts on renovation. Up on the fort you can find a beautiful garden, and if you are lucky you may see some colorful peafowls. Of course the weather was not apt for bird photography and we did not have much time with us, but if you ever visit the fort, make sure you can send at least 2-3 hours there.
