Kandy - the sacred city of Sri Lanka

Tripoto

After enjoying Knuckles mountain range and loading our cameras with beautiful memories, we headed to Kandy. Known as a pilgrimage destination for the Temple of the Tooth Relic is listed UNESCO world Heritage site. Spiritual significant of this central Sri Lankan city attracts more and more tourists and spiritualists every year. Kandy used to be a capital of the ancient kings’ era.

Let me talk about temple of the Tooth Relic.

Located in the royal palace complex which houses the Relic of the tooth of Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. The temple which houses the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha is one of the holiest shrines in the entire Buddhist world.

Visiting the temple and museum just took me back to that era of kings when everything used to be royal. Museum exhibits really good information related to Buddhism. Its a must not miss.

Cultural dance by local Sri Lankan was an another treat on same day while I was still trying to settle down with historical sight of temple. The local Sri Lankan dance is being beautifully presented by artists and the joy on faces just makes you want to be part of it.

And that huge Buddha monument – the one on hill top, with kindness, sympathy and happiness on his face, is known as Bahiravokanda Vihara Buddha Statue. You can look at the whole city while standing in feet of Buddha there.

And I think I should stop praising the beautiful city and let you enjoy the virtual treat…..But some pointers before that –

Kandy is the second largest city in Sri Lanka

Historical records suggest that Kandy was first established by the Vikramabahu III, 1357–1374 AD.

Kandy is surrounded by mountains and lots of options for hotels, food and rentals are available.

City’s heart is famous Kandy Lake which is popular for strolling.

Kandy temple was attacked by LTTE in 1998 and you can see the pictures of bad memories in the museum beside Kandy temple.

The cultural dance show beside Kandy temple is bit expensive but worth the money and time.

That’s it as of now. Enjoy the visuals and join me for train ride as I am catching train from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya.
