Kerala is home to some of the most beautiful backwater resorts in the world. Surrounded by mangroves and unending sunset views of tiny country boats in the distance, it is a dream holiday destination. However, the next time you visit God’s own country, you don’t need to book a hotel room as you can choose to enjoy these views from an island, that's all yours!
Perched on the stunning backwaters of Kerala, Vini’s Farm is an island situated on the confluence of the Kallada river and Ashtamudi lake near Kollam. Combining your fascination for having a Robinson Crusoe moment with all the luxuries of modern life, this property is breathtakingly beautiful.
Located on Munroe island, it has a gorgeous homestay to take away all your urban stress. Munroe island is in reality not a single landmass, but a group of mostly small islands which are connected by a network of canals.
Thickly covered in coconut palms and other trees, the islands are blessed with rich flora and fauna. The property along with its budget sister property Munroe Eco Camp are located on two of these adjoining islands.
With wooden rustic cottages on stilts, it has two plush rooms with attached bathrooms that give uninterrupted views of the lake and its surroundings.
Although you can have the entire island to yourself, you can also book just one room while the other room gets booked by not more than one other couple. The island thus restricts the number of guests to 4, ensuring complete privacy for its guests. It is an ideal getaway for couples, artists, writers and anyone who is looking for peace by escaping the touristy crowds.
Apart from the uniqueness of staying alone on an island, another highlight of your stay here will surely be the food. Offering authentic Kerala cuisine, the homestay offers fresh organic vegetables depending on the season. The meals are served in different parts of the islands giving you a truly unique dining experience. A personal chef cooks local delicacies to suit your taste buds and also encourages you to take a cooking class and learn the nuances of the local cuisine.
Things to do
While on the island, you can choose to take a swim in the lake when you feel like it or spend a lazy afternoon fishing along canals on tiny country boats in the open backwaters. Local staff also enjoy taking visitors out on farm walks to learn about farming techniques such as toddy tapping and farming below lake level. Vini’s farm is also a haven for bird watchers as it offers ample opportunities to spot species such as woodpeckers, kingfishers, herons and snakebirds etc. They can also arrange for water-related activities such as kayaking, fish farming or fishing for seafood etc.
Run by an environmentally conscious couple, Aram and his wife Vinita, it was inspired by Aram’s dad who was a Conservator of forests. A student of hospitality and management, Aram wanted to nurture his childhood love for nature by offering a truly out-of-the-ordinary experience for his guests. Pampering them with personalised services and making them live life king-size without compromising on sustainability, he planned this venture as a surprise gift to his wife.
Encouraging responsible rural tourism, Vini’s farm provides income to the locals and also teaches the local youth about organic farming and sustainability. Completely in tandem with nature, a holiday here will be exploring the beauty of this exotic island while experiencing utmost relaxation in the lap of nature.
Offering 2 king size bedrooms, the cost of a stay here starts at Rs 26,000 for twin sharing and Rs 32,000 for 4 people per night including taxes.
