People are suffering from a constant desire for wanderlust travel for a lot of reasons. I travel for a different reason every time, and sometimes even without any reason. Trek to the highest peak in Maharashtra to the Kalsubai peak and temple was no less than a roller coaster feeling. (And as funny as it may sound, I did roll down a few times while descending from the peak.)

Kalsubai peak is a part of a small town, Igatpuri near Mumbai and Pune and is easily accessible by road. The highest point of the peak is crowned with Kalsubai Temple. People from around the villages and cities walk all the way up to take blessings of the goddess Kalsubai.

We started from Mumbai in the evening and reached the base of the trek around 12:30 in the night. After a small briefing session we were all set to capture the peak. A midnight trek was certainly an overwhelming idea and it did not disappoint me at all. After climbing mostly uphill, taking the twists and the turns around the mountain, trying to hold ground at the edges and balancing through the ladders we finally made it to the peak at about 4:30 in the morning.

We had some time to kill till sunrise. We decided to relax and do some star gazing. We were fortunate to spot some major planets like Saturn and Venus along with millions of stars all bright and clear. A sight to behold. A sight we crave for in the cities.

I was left spell bound with the view of the morning sky. Those changing colors, the cool breeze that was slowly becoming more welcoming, and the chirping noises of the birds dancing with the morning light, left us wanting for more.

But then it was time to leave. Before the scorching heat of the sun made a dent in our beautiful memories of the night sky we started descending back to the plains. It took us about 3 hours to reach back to the base after tumbling down the hill a couple of times. The sun was bright up on our heads by then and all we could think about was food. We hogged at a small village food stall and I must mention the food was super awesome.

Kalsubai, the highest peak in the state of Maharashtra, India is indeed an amazing peak to capture. To make your experience a lot more phenomenal try taking a guided night trek up to the peak. A monsoon trek to the peak will be great too.
