Jaipur, popularly known as the Pink City, is famous for its exclusive architecture, historical monuments and palaces. Nestled in the heart of this enchanting city of Rajasthan, lies a magnificent haven that transports you to an era of opulence and grandeur.

The Taj Rambagh Palace, a former residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur, stands today as a resplendent heritage hotel, offering its guests an unforgettable experience steeped in regal charm. I had the good fortune of experiencing a stay in this property a decade ago - when YouTube wasn't as popular and Instagram wasn't available yet.

Originally built in 1835, as the home of the queen’s favourite handmaiden, the Ramabagh Palace has seen many royal transitions. From a royal guesthouse and hunting lodge, it later turned into the residence of the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II and his queen, Maharani Gayatri Devi. The marbled corridors and regal rooms echo of royalty that have lasted many years and have been carefully restored to make it a legendary living palace hotel.

The Royal Welcome

I had stayed at this property in the pre-Instagram era. That was when the experience did not involve creating reels and lip-syncing to popular songs. It was about soaking it all in. From the moment we entered the grand gates of Rambagh Palace, we were greeted with a warm Rajasthani welcome fit for royalty. The palace's extravagant architecture, the intricate frescoes, marble corridors and sprawling gardens, set the stage for an extraordinary sojourn. The staff, dressed in traditional attire, ensured that every guest received personalized attention, making us feel like a cherished member of the royalty.

The Accommodation

The rooms and suites at the Rambagh Palace are a testament to luxury and elegance. Each one is uniquely designed, blending traditional Rajasthani motifs with modern amenities. Lavish four-poster beds, hand-carved furniture and silk draperies created an ambiance of regality. The spacious marble bathroom, equipped with a lavish bathtub and fragrant bath amenities was imperially attractive. The mansion has 78 Mughal-inspired suites and rooms. Of them, two are grand presidential Suites.

There are three Grand Royal Suites that are originally part of the private chambers of the royal family. Even the huge library is carefully restored to preserve the original architectural style of the palace. The private balconies or terraces offer breathtaking views of the palace gardens, exuding the grace and splendor of era bygone.

The Dining experience

Indulging in the culinary delights at the Rambagh Palace is an experience that I will never be able to forget. I wasn't accustomed to clicking photos before having a bite at the delicacies back then. Hence, I gorged upon the delicious food as soon as it was served.

The hotel boasts a collection of exquisite restaurants, each offering a distinct dining experience. The Rajput Room, adorned with hand-painted murals, is a multi-cuisine restaurant; while Suvarna Mahal, an erstwhile palace ballroom with huge crystal chandeliers, serves delectable royal Indian feast.

For a more casual setting, Verandah Café offers al fresco dining amidst the serene palace gardens. The Polo Bar, adorned with trophies and polo memorabilia, invites guests to savor a delightful array of spirits and cocktails. Every meal at the Taj Rambagh Palace is a feast fit for royalty.

The Palace Grounds

Waking up to the soothing sound of a flute being played in the patio outside our room was incredibly exquisite. Beyond the palace's luxurious rooms, there was a wealth of experiences awaiting exploration. Guided tours led me through the historic halls and chambers, unraveling stories of the palace's illustrious past. The intricate artwork, the delicate glasswork, and the royal artifacts showcased the rich heritage of Rajasthan.

The elaborate gardens, beautifully adorned with fountains and pavilions, sandstone balustrades, cupolas and ‘chattris’ or cenotaphs, beckoned me to lose myself in their beauty. Peacocks dancing around in the gardens merrily was a view that I can never forget.

There are no YouTube shorts, Instagram reels; just a few snaps captured on my mobile camera that help me reminisce about the stay in the palace a decade ago.

Over the years, this palace hotel has played host to several illustrious guests, such as Lord Louis Mountbatten, Prince Charles and Jacqueline Kennedy.
