I seldom write guides on food. Although I am a big-time foodie, I have not been able to mix my destination exploration with food indulgence quite efficiently. Also, travel sometimes gets so exhausting that I do not have the energy to try and cherish the food. Just serve me my comfort food (yes, my food memory is outstanding), and I get recharged.
On my recent trip to Madurai, I went with a list of dishes that I wanted to try. I knew that I would have a whole evening after I landed in Madurai, and half of the next day as I would have already visited the Meenakshi Temple at 5 am. So, I would be free latest by 8 am until I leave for Rameswaram at 2-2:30 pm.
Long story short, I got ample time to explore the famous restaurants and dishes in the city of Madurai. Below are 4 places/ dishes that you must try on your visit to the city.
1. Murugan Idli
If you are from Tamil Nadu, you would know about Murugan Idli. There are 26 outlets across India, Singapore, France and the UK. I have been to Chennai a couple of times before where the restaurant has many branches, but never got to visit any of them.
Anyway, Madurai is a bit more special as this is the city from where, Manoharan Shanmugasundaram's parents, the original owner of the renowned chain, started their culinary journey with the restauran 35 years back.
The idlis they served are ridiculously soft, and literally melts in the mouth. Moreover, their chutneys - coconut, coriander, mint, and tomoto just make the whole experience so palatable.
Do not forget to end the meal with a glass of filter coffee.
Good to know: If you are driving a car yourself, avoid taking it to this joint. It is located in the main city, and finding a parking space is next to impossible.
Address: Murugan Idli, 46, Thalavoy Street, Madurai Main, Madurai, 625001
Timings: 8 am to 11 pm
Cost for two: INR 400
2. Kothu Parotta
'Kothu' means shredded or minced, and Kothu Parotta recipe consists of shredded parotta (flaky, layered bread made of refined wheat flour or maida) tossed in fried vegetables or chicken or salna. It is quite a popular street food in South India.
Although it finds its origin in the island country of Sri Lanka, the Kothu Parotta has made its way to the daily diets of mainland Tamilians. I tried the veg Kothu parotta, and I can say that I would like to recreate some time in my kitchen. I will only add something to crunchy like peanuts or sev on the top.
Good to know: The dish is a little on the spicier side. If you are not fond of peppery food, you better ask the server to convey the request to go easier on the spices to the chef.
Address: Jayram Bakery, 63, Pitchaipillai Chavadi, Theni Main Road,Kalavasal, Madurai-625016
Timings: 7 am to 11 pm
Cost for two: INR 250
3. Paruthi Paal - one of the best dishes that you must try in Madurai
Well, a drink that was a surprise to me was Paruthi Paal. The hot beverage is a concoction of cottonseed milk, ginger, cardamom and almonds, and is preferred as a source for treating cold and cough. Paruthi Paal is a part of South Indian traditions, and is often served as a welcome drink in man hotels and guesthouses.
There are a a number of benefits of Paruthi Paal, but, I first drank it only with the purpose of cooling my body in the harsh tempertures of Madurai. It was only after sipping on the beverage that I realized how flavorful the drink is.
Good to know: Paruthi Paal is considered a "triple-nutrient" beverage, boasting high levels of protein, essential fatty acids, and sugars, making it a potent energy drink.
Address: Sri Sastha, Netaji road, bus stand, Periyar, Madurai Main, Madurai, 625502

Cost for two: 5 am to 9:30 pm
4. Jigarthanda
Madurai's renowned beverage, Jigarthanda, boasts a rich history dating back to 1977 when Mr. P. Sheik Meeran introduced it through push carts.
This drink is known for its natural coolants like almond gum and nannari syrup and is perfect to drink at any time you like. Beyond its refreshing taste, Jigarthanda can aid you with good fats and relieve constipation.
Good to know: You would most probably mistake this chilled drink as Falooda. Yes, Jigarthanda and falooda are similar drinks, but they differ in taste and preparation.
